  • Transactional pathways

    Open Access•Dana Kornberg•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 43

I introduce the concept of transactional pathways, coined by anthropologist Jane Guyer, to trace the institutional processes that contribute to uneven and unjust patterns of wealth and status distribution under systems of colonialism and racial/caste capitalism. Transactional pathways employ historical perspectives to reveal how divergent economic institutions and sources of valuation relate to social hierarchies. This approach links everyday eco…

  • Competing for Jurisdiction

    Open Access•Dana Kornberg•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2020

How did informal garbage collectors, who had long provided the only door-to-door and recycling services in Delhi, manage to survive the introduction of formal garbage collection trucks? This question raises the larger problem of why informal institutions—well-organized and socially recognized, but legally unauthorized and unregulated platforms for political and economic organization—have proven so persistent. I draw on evidence collected during 2…

  • Organizing Under Austerity

    Open Access•Amy Krings, Dana Kornberg et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 6

What might it take for politically marginalized residents to challenge cuts in public spending that threaten to harm their health and wellbeing? Specifically, how did residents of Flint, Michigan contribute to the decision of an austerity regime, which was not accountable to them, to spend millions to switch to a safe water source? Relying on evidence from key interviews and newspaper accounts, we examine the influence and limitations of resident…

  • Disposession without Developent

    Open Access•Dana Kornberg•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2019

Levien’s Dispossession without Development exhibits the best of U.S. Sociology: rich empirical data, causal argumentation, and generalizable claims. Yet it does so with incisive and necessary historical specificity and a stubborn practicality that shrewdly eschews romantic notions of resistance or heart-wrenching monolithic tales of destruction, all while maintaining explicit commitment to the dispossessed. Dispossession Without Development trace…

  • The Structural Origins of Territorial Stigma

    Open Access•Dana Kornberg•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2016•Cited by: 19•References: 32

This article develops the concept of territorial stigma by analyzing how it can be cultivated at the level of political institutions across administrative divides. I consider the case of Detroit's regional water department, which until 2016 was owned and operated by the city and served over 120 suburban regional municipalities. I start by examining the cooperative city-suburban water system expansion in the 1950s and then analyze the rise of Detr…
