  • Opposing Abortion to Protect Women

Carol Mason•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2019

This article examines the transnational work that since the 1990s has increasingly opposed abortion in terms of protecting women. It therefore explores how pro-woman rhetoric is used to foster right-wing politics by way of, and beyond, the fight over abortion. Narratives depicting white women as dupes of a sordid, satanic system of abortion provision ignore the fact that most women report feeling relief—not grief, regret, or trauma—after terminat…

  • White Masculinity in the Recent South

Carol Mason, Trent Watts•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2009•References: 1

The cover photograph of White Masculinity in the Recent South depicts a halted middle-aged hunter with chubby white cheeks and a paunch not very well camouflaged by his paramilitary field jacket. He carries a rifle haphazardly over his shoulder, the muzzle aimless. This is not the chiseled Charlton Heston whose muscular Christianity parted waters and promoted the National Rifle Association, not the buff Rambo who remasculinized America, not a mil…

  • Reproducing the Souls of White Folk

    Open Access•Carol Mason•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2007•References: 14

Focusing on a textbook controversy that emerged in Kanawha County, West Virginia, in 1974, Mason explores the discursive production of white ethnicity in the rhetorical, visual, and political strategies used during an organized protest against the new multicultural curriculum adopted by the local school board. What the author finds puzzling is the ways in which these productions of “soul” and “nation” enabled unlikely political alliances between …

  • The Hillbilly Defense

    Carol Mason, Carol A Mason•ARTICLE•NWSA Journal•2005

The dichotomous images of Jessica Lynch, a West Virginia soldier who was rescued from an Iraqi hospital in 2003, and Lynndie England, another West Virginia soldier whose picture became synonymous with prison abuse in Iraq in 2004, have necessitated a feminist contribution to the theorizing of the hillbilly as a cultural icon. This article examines historical, political, and literary contexts for diverting attention to the hillbilly as a defense a…

  • Cracked Babies and the Partial Birth of a Nation

    Carol Mason•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2000

This essay explores whether fetal protection cases concerning ‘partial birth’ and ‘crack babies’ reflect an undercurrent of millennialism that characterizes anti-abortion violence. Because the dichotomized millennialist worldview of pure and impure domains easily corroborates racialist ideas that there are pure and impure races, discussions of fetal protection may also accommodate race-specific assumptions or implications. Fetuses involved in ‘pa…

  • From Protest to Retribution

    Carol Mason•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In the 1990s, pro-life violence signaled a move away from protest and toward retribution. Pro-life litigation and legislation, especially as described in an underground manual titled Firestorm: A Guerrilla Strategy for Pro-Life America, also indicate this trend. In fact, pro-life guerrilla warfare and pro-life ''guerrilla legislation'' function together politically, even if they are not orchestrated. Close analyses of Firestorm and other primary …
