Culture, Production of
The production of culture perspective focuses on the ways in which the symbolic elements of culture are significantly shaped by the systems within which they are created, distributed, evaluated, taught, and preserved. The initial focus was on the production of expressive symbols such as artworks, scientific research reports, popular culture, religious practices, legal judgments, journalism, and other parts of the culture industries. Naturalizing Gender through Childhood Socialization Messages in a Zoo
We draw on public observations conducted in a zoo to identify three instances in which adults make use of its specific spatial and symbolic resources to transmit socialization messages to children according to “naturalized” models of hegemonic gender difference. First, adults attribute gender to zoo animals by projecting onto them human characteristics associated with feminine and masculine stereotypes. Second, adults mobilize zoo exhibits as pro…

American zoo: A Sociological Safari
Trading in his tweed jacket for a zoo uniform and a pair of muddy workboots, Grazian introduces us to zookeepers and animal rights activists, parents and toddlers, and the other human primates that make up the zoo's social world. He shows that in a major shift away from their unfortunate pasts, American zoos now emphasize naturalistic exhibits teeming with lush and immersive landscapes, breeding programs for endangered pasts, and enrichment activ…

Where the Wild Things Aren't: Exhibiting Nature in American Zoos
In this article I explore the problems and tensions inherent in staging naturalistic zoo exhibits. Exhibit staging requires zoos to negotiate among a variety of competing aesthetic and organizational demands, including the cultural expectations of audiences, the educational mission of zoos, and the practicalities of managing live animal species. The negotiation of these demands gives rise to a particular set of strategies of impression management…

Urban Nightlife, Social Capital, and the Public Life of Cities1
Sociologists and urban scholars emphasize how nightlife establishments contribute to the social capital and public life of cities. In the interests of tempering this line of argument, I suggest three generalizable empirical findings that provide grounds for skepticism on this score: (1) the racial and class barriers to participation imposed by urban nightlife enterprises; (2) the normalization of gender differences and the routine harassment of w…

Parallèlement, la recherche ethnographique en tant que telle représente un genre d’œuvre artistique qui requiert non seulement la coordination de différents acteurs sociaux travaillant collectivement, mais incite également ses praticien…

The Girl Hunt: Urban Nightlife and the Performance of Masculinity as Collective Activity
The purpose of this article is to document the collective nature of gender performance and sexual pursuit, activities typically associated with individual rather than group behavior. Drawing on narrative accounts, I analyze how young heterosexual male students employ the power of collective rituals of homosociality to perform sexual competence and masculine identity by 'girl hunting' in the context of urban nightlife. These rituals are designed t…
