  • Longitudinal Measures of Masculinity and Femininity

    Open Access•Dan Cassino•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2025•References: 58

Self-placement measures of masculinity and femininity have been gaining popularity in political science research, but questions remain about their long-term stability and the extent to which political views may impact gender identities. Taking advantage of two waves of measures of masculinity and femininity self-placement in an online panel, a categorical measure of masculinity and femininity (making use of a six-point scale, anchored scale) is f…

  • Femininity, LGBTQ Identity, and Paranormal Belief

    T J Silva, Dan Cassino•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 47

How are gender and sexuality related to belief in the paranormal? Study 1 uses a probability sample of New Jersey residents (n = 813) to run an experiment in which respondents reported their level of belief in astrology, ghostly hauntings, the Jersey Devil, and two political conspiracy theories. Half of respondents were primed to think about their gender prior to answering these questions. Women, but not men, who were primed were substantially mo…

  • Men at (home) work

Dan Cassino, Yasemin Besen-Cassino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2022

Past work has shown that men's gender identities often lead them to eschew household labour in an attempt to shore up threatened masculinity. As the COVID-19 pandemic has lead to both enormous financial disruption and high levels of stress among the population, we expect these patterns to be exacerbated. We focus on the helping children with virtual school activities, as it is a uniquely stressful form of household labour, and use two studies, us…

  • Political identity, gender identity or both? The political effects of sexual orientation and gender identity items in survey research

Dan Cassino, Yasemin Besen‐cassino•ARTICLE•European Journal of Politics and…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 21

Issues arising from the measurement of gender identity on surveys have received scant attention from survey methodologists. We make use of three studies (two in the US and one in Mexico) to look at the effects of asking about gender identity on downstream measurements of political party affiliation. In all three studies, we show a significant impact of priming respondents to think about gender identity on expressed political identity. In two of t…

  • Of Masks and Men? Gender, Sex, and Protective Measures during Covid-19

    Open Access•Dan Cassino, Yasemin Besen-Cassino et al.•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2020•Cited by: 19•References: 9

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, men have been consistently less likely to report wearing a protective face mask. There are several possible reasons for this difference, including partisanship and gender identity. Using a national live-caller telephone survey that measures gender identity, we show that men's gender identities are strongly related to their views of mask wearing, especially when gender identity is …

  • Race, threat and workplace sexual harassment

    Open Access•Dan Cassino, Yasemin Besen‐cassino•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 17

Sexual harassment is a persistent problem for women in the workplace. Prior research has explored the effects of sexual harassment on the psychological, physical and economic wellbeing of the victims. Despite the extensive research exploring the causes, most studies focus on micro‐level factors, and few studies examine the role of macro‐level factors on sexual harassment in the workplace. Using public Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC…

  • Sometimes (but Not This Time), a Gun Is Just a Gun

    Open Access•Dan Cassino, Yasemin Besen‐cassino•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2019•Cited by: 22•References: 4

Today, despite national campaigns and mass shootings, gun sales continue to rise. The majority of gun owners in the United States are men, and prior research has documented the complex relationship between masculinity and gun ownership. However, a majority of the research has remained on the micro level. In this article, we look at the effects of men’s unemployment on gun ownership. Using both national‐ and state‐level Federal Bureau of Investiga…

  • Coverage and Campaign Coffers in 2012

    Open Access•Dan Cassino•ARTICLE•Presidential Studies Quarterly•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Mutz’s seminal work on the effect of media coverage on campaign contributions is now more than 20 years old. Using a combination of Federal Election Commission contribution data, aggregated polling data, and analysis of media content from news broadcasts, Tobit regression analysis is used to determine which factors led small and large contributors to give money to candidates in the 2012 Republican presidential primary. The results largely confirm…

    Open Access•Dan Cassino, Cengiz Erisen•ARTICLE•American Politics Research•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 31

Using a question-order experiment, half the respondents in a national RDD (random digit dial) likely voter survey taken just prior to the 2008 Presidential Primary election were primed to think about President Bush and the war in Iraq before making their candidate choice. Results show that the priming had a significant effect on their candidate choice, and that priming individuals to think about the war significantly aided the candidacy of eventu…
