North Central Sociological Association Presidential Address: What the World Needs Now: A Model of Rational Altruism
This address challenges the widely held view that social-economic rationality is rooted in egoistical behavior. Based on an examination of the concept of altruism in sociology, the discussion features the outlines of a formal alternative model of motivation. The model includes altruism as a legitimate “rational choice.”
Giving Altruism Its Due: A Possible World or Possibly No World at All
The program that Pitirim A. Sorokin labeled “Creative Altruism” is discussed as a key to achieving a better possible world of human relations. The discussion includes an overview of the idea of altruism in sociology, an examination of the considerable resistance to the idea of altruistic conduct, commentary on the lack of a specific set of techniques to implement Sorokin's program, and a brief inventory of current activities intended to give altr…
Reflections on Teaching: North Central Sociological Association 2008 John F. Schnabel Lecture: Notes on Biography and History: All You Really Need
CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE I want to begin by thanking our teaching award committee chair, Kathy Rowell, for the very kind, and largely undeserved, introduction. And, of course, my sincere gratitude goes to the NCSA, the fine organization over which I will be presiding this year, for selecting me for the award. As I told the selection committee, I cannot, in good conscience, take personal credit for the achievements recognized by the award. This …

Paradox and Society: The Work of Bernard Mandeville
The writings of Bernard Mandeville mark an important transition between enlightenment, social philosophy, and modern science. Born in Holland in 1670 and educated as a physician, Mandeville spent the greater part of his working life in England, where he died in 1733. In some respects, Mandeville can be compared to Voltaire--Mandeville's junior by twenty-four years. Mandeville had the knack of making controversies volcanic and of arousing heated d…

War Painters and Western Science
This essay focuses on one epoch in one culture, the 'war painter' system in Nazi Germany, and considers its social trappings (professional, political) as characteristics shared by another epoch and culture, evaluation systems in contemporary Western science. The parallels are instructive not only for a self-critical sociology of knowledge such as that envisioned by Karl Mannheim and Alvin Gouldner, but moreover as an anthropological test of cultu…
