Indigenous peoples and renewable energy: Impacts, contestations, and collective action
Although renewable energy (RE) transitions offer pathways to sustainability, their implementation often exacerbates existing injustices, particularly for indigenous communities. This paper examines indigenous peoples' complex and evolving relationship with RE transitions through a systematic review of 87 peer-reviewed articles. It identifies three key thematic areas:(1) the impacts of RE transitions on indigenous communities; (2) indigenous conte…
A two-stage concept mapping for emerging concepts: An analysis of the Smart Healthy City
Rapid urbanization and technological advancement pose complex challenges to urban health governance, particularly amid demographic aging, environmental pressures, and widening health inequalities. While Smart Healthy Cities (SHCs) offer a promising paradigm to address these issues, current models lack a comprehensive, theoretically grounded framework for implementation. This study defines the SHC concept and examines its relevance for building in…
Overgeneralization of conditioned fear in patients with social anxiety disorder
Taken together, our findings suggest that SAD patients may exhibit a tendency towards overgeneralization of fear responses and show distinct patterns in processing generalized threat stimuli compared to healthy controls. Even though overgeneralization was not evident in physiological measures, it is necessary to consider this behavioral characteristic in the clinical management of patients with SAD
Data donation: Using the gift relationship framework to address privacy and environmental issues of energy consumption data collection
Data, particularly consumption data, is an essential and often overlooked aspect of energy transitions. Fine-grained data on the diverse sources of energy in the energy mix, how it is distributed, and patterns of use by individuals and households help smoothen the transition to renewable energy. However, obtaining, utilizing, and storing energy data generates concerns about privacy and climate change. We propose that both the need for high qualit…

Examining the relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms in Korean women engaged in soccer during the coronavirus pandemic
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sudden changes to daily lives, such as self-isolation and social distancing, and has negatively affected sleep quality and patterns. The resulting psychological discomfort has caused many Korean women to experience depressive moods. Vigorous physical activity is considered effective in improving sleep quality and alleviating depressive symptoms. As a form of vigorous physical activity, soccer could b…

Public concerns and connected and automated vehicles: Safety, privacy, and data security
One dimension of the emerging politics of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) is the development of public concerns over their societal implications and associated policy issues. This study uses original survey data from the United States to contribute to the anticipation of future policy and political issues for CAVs. Several studies have surveyed the public regarding CAVs; however, there are few studies that highlight the multidimensional p…
Conflicted transitions: Exploring the actors, tactics, and outcomes of social opposition against energy infrastructure
Given the growing frequency, severity, and salience of social mobilization and community action on energy and climate issues, in this study we systematically explore the configurations of types of infrastructure, actors, tactics, and outcomes of recent opposition to energy transitions across seven carbon-intensive regions in Asia, Europe, and North America. Based on both a literature review and an original dataset of 130 case studies spanning the…
Safety and privacy regulations for unmanned aerial vehicles: A multiple comparative analysis
With the growth of commercial and recreational use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones), there is increasing attention to the need for regulation. A systematic review is conducted using a multiple comparative perspective: across three political jurisdictions (the United States, the European Union, and Japan) and across two areas of societal implication and policy (i.e., privacy and safety), with additional comparisons drawn from regulati…
A comparative, sociotechnical design perspective on Responsible Innovation: Multidisciplinary research and education on digitized energy and Automated Vehicles
This study develops a comparative, sociotechnical design perspective for interdisciplinary teams of social scientists and computer scientists. Sociotechnical design refers to identifying both technical and governance challenges and to understanding the ways in which the two types of problems affect and define each other. Approaching design as an open-ended, iterative process, the study develops a triple comparative perspective to problem finding …
Data privacy and residential smart meters: Comparative analysis and harmonization potential
Building on privacy principles of the Fair Information Practice Principles and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, the study compares national policies and programs in Europe and North America and identifies prevailing practices for implementing privacy goals for residential energy customers: customer opt-out policies, sampling and sharing guidelines, independent data storage, and governmental enforcement authority. The analy…
