Public and Private Priorities in Managing Time in Genetic Research: The Icelandic deCode Case
This article addresses the perplexing instance of Iceland effectively extending a franchise in 1998-scientifically and fiscally-to deCode Genetics to archive the population's medical records, combine them with extensive genealogical records and ongoing genetic research, and use the information for research and commercial yield that is essentially the private provenance of deCode Genetics. After an overview of the special historical context of Ice…

Curling in Canada
World championships have been contested for men in curling since 1959 and women since 1979, and there are few sports of any kind that have witnessed so commanding dominance by a nation of a sport as Canada in curling. Curling is known to have been played by a Scottish regiment stationed in Canada in 1789. A continuing international effort led to full inclusion of curling into the winter Olympic Games held in Nagano, Japan in 1998, where Canada wo…

Evil as Indexical: The Implicit Objective Status of Guns and Illegal Drugs
We use C.H. Mead's perspective on the meaning of social objects and his theory of the past and Harold Garfinkel's application of indexicality to describe how people respond to social objects as evil. Mead's notion of an implied objective past illuminates how social actors not only connect objects to past evils but also invoke an objective past to index evil in the future. Focusing on guns and illegal drugs, we maintain that responses to each draw…
Twilight of the Hero in the Tour De France
Maurice Garin won the first Tour de France in 1903, and Lance Armstrong won in 1999, providing 86 races for analysis (after cancellations for war). Participation, fan interest, and success have been heavily French and by continent almost exclusively European. The bounded population of occurrences and singular geographical locus combine for a useful analytical frame for investigating how particular sports are affected by national cultures. The sec…

Structuralism, Systems Theory, and Ethnomethodology In The Sociology Of The Family
Structuralism, systems theory, and ethnomethodology advocate revisions within the social sciences which are fundamental and general. Consequently, they solicit consideration for adoption in the study of the family. Social science use may ultimately entail selective application and integration, but both of these kinds of use require some set of reference axes for making distinctions, documenting points of convergence, and charting developments. Th…
Simulated Research Experiences for Use in Teaching Research Methods
experiences for use in teaching research methods to undergraduates. The experiences are intended to complement traditional instructional strategies which use lecture and discussion formats and reading materials. The fit of the simulations with a suggestive theory of education is described. Results from an evaluation of one implementation of the simulations suggest that they provide: (a) increments in research reasoning and problem solving skill; …
Multidimensionality of Conjugal Decision Making Indices: Comparative Analyses of Five Samples
Rapid expansion of research dealing with outcome of conjugal decision making has heightened the need for evaluation of indices employed. The purpose of this article is to provide an empirical test of the general hypothesis that additive indices of conjugal decision making yield a unidimensional measure. Analyses of data from five previous studies reveal little inter-item relationship within samples or within subsamples of husbands and wives, and …
An Examination of Intergenerational Patterns of Religious Belief and Practice
The paper presents data documenting adolescent-parent intergenerational patterns of belief and practice for a range of religious factors. Results show discontinuity in orientation toward the religious institution; partial continuity over religious beliefs; and similarity in meanings attached to classic religious symbols. The patterns suggest intergenerational differences may be more in the form of expression than in belief; and that symbolic data…
