Managed and unmanaged whale mortality in the California Current Ecosystem
Whales serve important biological and cultural functions in the California Current ecosystem (CCE). Due to concerns regarding anthropogenic impacts on whales, the California Ocean Protection Council articulated a goal to achieve zero mortality for CCE whales, with a target of creating a statewide plan by 2022. Achieving zero mortality is a laudable but difficult goal as success depends on understanding the existing sources of mortality, the oppor…

Multidimensional Assessment of Emotion Regulation Difficulties in Adolescents Using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale
The authors explored the utility of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) in assessing adolescents’ emotion regulation. Adolescents (11-17 years; N = 870) completed the DERS and measures of externalizing and internalizing problems. Confirmatory factor analysis suggested a similar factor structure in the adolescent sample of the authors as demonstrated previously among adults. Furthermore, results indicated no gender bias in ratings …

Professing Passion
Interviews with 40 recently tenured university professors indicated that scholarly work is emotional in content; it draws on scholars’ emotional resources. This study blurs such distinctions by portraying academic work as anch…
The Science Glass Ceiling
On Experience, Memory, and Knowing
In this article I describe how my studied recollections of how I learned about my father’s life, in the Holocaust and beyond it, have led me to make my scholarly work, existing for years apart from myself, much more a part of myself. I describe what it meant to me, years back, to learn of my father’s life—a personal narrative that for much of my life I purposefully separated from my professional narrative of what (I thought) it meant to learn and…

Context, Cognition, and Culture
This article, presented as an interpretive case study, examines how members of an established college culture experienced change related to the entry of a new college president and how the new president changed as a result of his entry experience. The study analyzes the evolving relationship between the new president and campus participants in five phases: (a) the president entering and making sense of the new setting, (b) the president selective…

Making Mistakes
The literature on the college and university presidency focuses on presidential roles [6, 15, 16], presidential tasks and responsibilities [9, 30, 48], and the social and organizational contexts in which college presidents work [32, 33]. However, we know very little about how presidents take on their roles, identify and assume their responsibilities, and learn about their work places [18], and with few exceptions [10], we know even less about the…
