Gendering modern Japanese history
This chapter builds on the “Introduction” to Gendering Modern Japanese History (Molony and Uno 2005). The essays in that volume and the co-editors’ introductory analysis of the state of the field focused on two major issues—the imbrication of gender and modernity and the challenge of “gendering” (by which we meant gendered analysis) to dominant historical narratives, a major goal of feminist historiography frequently articulated at that time. Tho…
Gender in Modern East Asia: An Integrated History
Gender in Modern East Asia explores the history of women and gender in China, Korea, and Japan from the seventeenth century to the present. This unique volume treats the three countries separately within each time period while also placing them in global and regional contexts. Its transnational and integrated approach connects the cultural, economic, and social developments in East Asia to what is happening across the wider world. The text focuse…
Women’s Activism and “Second Wave” Feminism: Transnational Histories
Women’s Activism and “Second Wave” Feminism situates late 20th century feminisms within a global framework of women’s activism. Its chapters, written by leading international scholars, demonstrate how issues of heterogeneity, transnationalism, and intersectionality have transformed understandings of historical feminism. It is no longer possible to imagine that feminism has ever fostered an unproblematic sisterhood among women blind to race, ethni…
From "Mothers of Humanity" to "Assisting the Emperor: Gendered Belonging in the Wartime Rhetoric of Japanese Feminist Ichikawa Fusae
Ichikawa Fusae, like other Japanese feminists from the 1920s through the 1940s, faced a dilemma as Japan pursued an increasingly aggressive foreign policy, first in Asia and later toward Western nations. A founder of the Women's Suffrage League who shared the gender-neutral beliefs of a transnational group of feminists, Ichikawa initially rejected the notion that women deserved the vote because of their status as mothers but eventually adopted th…

Gendering Modern Japanese History
"Although modern Japanese history has not yet been restructured by a foregrounding of gender, historians of Japan have begun to embrace gender as an analytic category. The sixteen chapters in this volume treat men as well as women, theories of sexuality as well as gender prescriptions, and same-sex as well as heterosexual relations in the period from 1868 to the present. All of them take the position that history is gendered; that is, historians …
Equality versus difference: The Japanese debate over ‘motherhood protection’, 1915–50
The phrase ‘motherhood protection’ (and its related but subtle variants, ‘protection of the mother’s body’, ‘mother-child protection’, and ‘motherhood security’) has had multiple meanings. Both ‘motherhood’ and ‘protection’ have been understood in differing ways, and the combination of these two words in various contexts and by variously interested individuals has produced a dynamic discursive environment for ‘motherhood protection’. ‘Motherhood’…
Minamata: Pollution and the Struggle for Democracy in Postwar Japan (review)
Minamata, a fishing town transformed in the early twentieth century by the development of Nitchitsu—a major chemical company renamed Shin Nitchitsu after World War II—came to symbolize the evils of industrial pollution by the 1960s and 1970s. Scores of residents were killed or severely incapacitated due to mercury poisoning caused by eating fish tainted by the organic mercury dumped with Shin Nitchitsu's wastewater into Minamata Bay. The horrors …
