You're Really Just a Gay Man in a Woman's Body
Queer theory has long argued for the liberatory potential of separating masculinity from men. This article examines whether and how masculinities can be radically transgressive for individuals and simultaneously re-create gendered systems of inequality. In two case studies-a drag troupe and a queer leather club-we find that the cultivated queer sexualities were mimetic iterations of sexual practices among gay men and came rife with both the possi…

Gender Circuits
Gender Circuits explores the impact of new technologies on the gendered lives of individuals through substantive sociological analysis and in-depth case studies. Examining the complex intersections between gender ideologies, social scripts, information and biomedical technologies, and embodied identities, this book explores whether and how new technologies are reshaping what it means to be a gendered person in contemporary society
Drag Queens and Drag Kings
In this article, we use case studies of two different drag performance collectives, the 801 Girls, a drag queen troupe in Key West, Florida, and the Disposable Boy Toys, a political feminist collective in Santa Barbara, California, to explore the differences between drag queens and drag kings. We argue that, despite their divergent routes to performing drag and the different contexts and styles of their shows, a similar critique of hegemonic gend…

Radical Feminism
Radical feminism arose in the US, Canada, and Britain out of young women's experiences within the civil rights, New Left, and anti‐war movements of the 1960s. Drawing on De Beauvoir's concept of “sex‐class” from The Second Sex (1952), radical feminism – emerging from what was known in the late 1960s as the women's liberation movement – developed an analysis of women's inequality at the social structural level and was a revolutionary (as opposed t…
Lesbian Feminism
Lesbian feminism is a political and philosophical strand of feminism that emerged in the US, Canada, and Britain in the 1970s. It holds as central tenets that heterosexuality is the seat of patriarchal power; lesbianism is a political choice and not an essential identity; and lesbians occupy a unique and empowered position vis‐à‐vis sexism and patriarchy because they do not rely on men for emotional, financial, or sexual attention and support. Le…
Drag Kinging and the Transformation of Gender Identities
This case study of the feminist drag troupe the Disposable Boy Toys (DBT) examines the relationship between drag and gender identity. Drawing on multiple methods, the author explores the range of gender identities that emerged through participation in DBT. Members saw DBT as the central catalyst for their own identity shifts. The author suggests that these identity transformations occurred through four collective mechanisms: imaginative possibili…

Trans’ cending Barriers
Drawing on in-depth interviews with 10 national transgender activists as well as analyses of movement publications and events, this article examines the use of the Internet in the development and growth of the transgender movement. The Internet, which functions both as a tool for activists and as a space within which activism can happen, reduces challenges and obstacles to mobilization and maximizes available tools and strategies for organizing. …
