  • The Practice of War

J Abbink, Mariam Abou Zahab et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Practice of War•2022

The fact is that war comes in many guises and its effects continue to be felt long after peace is proclaimed. This challenges the anthropologists who write of war as participant observers. Participant observation inevitably deals with the here and now, with the highly specific. It is only over the long view that one can begin to see the commonalities that emerge from the different forms of conflict and can begin to generalize. [From the Introduct…

  • The Long Walk V - Pastoral Nomads and Anthropology

    Open Access•Aparna Rao•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2003

In 2000, Nomadic Peoples started a series of interviews with senior scholars who have worked on nomadism and among nomadic communities. Obviously, Fredrik Barth was on our list of interviewees right from the beginning. Two years earlier, he had also graciously accepted the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' presented to him by the IUAES Commission on Nomadic Peoples (cf. Salzman 1997). All interviewers in this series have either been students or collea…

  • Pastoral Nomads, the State and a National Park

    Open Access•Aparna Rao•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Introduction Most of the world's nomadic communities live in South Asia, and this region has the greatest variety of domestic animals systematically herded--bovines, equines, cameis, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, guinea-fowl. Yet, scholarly interest in South Asian nomadism is meagre (Rao and Casimir 2003), and largely limited to expounding the 'problems' these 'backward' communities create for the state in its developmental aims. Reflecting colonial…

  • The many sources of identity

    Aparna Rao•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1999•Cited by: 7•References: 13

This article uses ethnographic and historical data on certain pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Jammu and Kashmir to illustrate the simultaneous or consecutive use of a variety of cultural features in the construction, maintenance and manipulation of identity. It describes and analyses the context specific uses of religion, language and so on to include as much as to exclude in various economic and political settings. The data exemplify t…

  • Prestations and Progeny

    Open Access•Aparna Rao•CHAPTER•Kinship, Networks, and Exchange•1998

The relationship between kinship and exchange is perhaps most obvious in the context of marriage. In most societies marital alliances entail the exchange of goods and/or services, which is often also a prerequisite for the exchange of rights in children. In this paper I present data on exchange in the form of marriage prestations among the Bakkarwal of Jammu and Kashmir, who are located in the western Himalayas (Khatana 1992; Rao 1992a; Rao and C…

  • Kinship, Networks, and Exchange

Open Access•Douglas White, Bojka Milicic et al.•BOOK•Kinship, Networks, and Exchange•1998•Cited by: 16

This collection of articles aims at revitalizing the study of kinship and exchange in a social network perspective. It brings together studies of empirical systems of marriage and descent with investigations of the flow of material resources in societies of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Europe. Restudies of classic ethnographic cases and fieldwork studies of kinship and exchange demonstrate how the social and material aspects of society are relat…

  • A Stereotyped Minority "Zigeuner" in Two Centuries of German Reference Literature

    Open Access•Aparna Rao, Michael J Casimir•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•1993

This paper reviews the entry "Zigeuner" in thirty editions of general encyclopaedias in the German language between 1819 and 1986. The entries were found to be largely repetitive, stereotyped, and much of the "information" plainly fictive. While the homogeneity of "Gypsies" is concluded explicitly in almost all these editions, there is a chronological variation in the stereotypes. The entries exhibit both racism and romanticism, both fear and fas…
