The theory of cross-scale interactions
Interdependence of social-ecological systems (SES) across the globe is rapidly increasing through increased connectivity, for example, through flow of information and trade. This case study of highly remote Himalayan villages in West Sikkim, India, explores how cross-scale interactions can shape the development of a local SES. In-depth interviews across four different institutional scales—state, district, gram panchayat unit and ward, show a rapi…
There Is Never a Peace Time, It Is Just No War Time”
There is no doubt that military occupation of civilian spaces and lives constitutes a fundamental structural violence. This is more easily apprehended in cases where exceptional violence is wrought by security forces on civilian populations, as in the Kashmir Valley in India. There must be some way out of here
In contemporary India, large numbers of Muslims tend to be segregated into ghettoes. Even when this is not the case, the study of Muslims is often stalked by a ghetto mentality reflected in thematic choices made by the researcher. Can consideration of everyday aspirations enable a shift away from this ghetto mentality? Or does the ghetto reassert itself as effect, beyond its spatiality, in a wider culture of suspicion that marks the relationship …
Experiments with Khomeini's Revolution in Kargil
Shi'i scholars from India have been a sizeable presence in seminaries in Iran and Iraq, both historically and today. Yet there is a dearth of scholarship on Shi'i linkages between India and West Asia, with the exception of historical work on the patronage of shrine cities in Iraq by centres of Shi'ism in India. Departing from this geographical and historical focus, this paper lends insight into contemporary religious networks between India and We…
Poetics and Politics of Borderland Dwelling
The experience of ‘cross-border dwellers’ corresponds clearly neither to the category of Partition refugees nor those in exile. This article is an ethnographic case study of the Baltis in Kargil living in the India-Pakistan borderland in the province of Kashmir. It discusses the seemingly contradictory emotions of a poetics of longing for the ‘other’ side and a politics of belonging in India. I argue that a tension persists between the geobody of…
