Urban/the City
This article, organized around three films—Stop Violence (dir. A. K. Sajan, 2002), Big B (dir. Amal Neerad, 2007), and Annayum Rassolum (dir. Rajeev Ravi, 2013)—attempts to account for a moment in the history of Malayalam cinema when an attempt to spatially imagine, through iterative images, the city as a visible space that was distinct, and situated within the state of Kerala, was undertaken. The “city” in Malayalam cinema is at once mediated by…

Kim Ki Duk’s promise, Zanussi’s betrayal
This paper, focusing on the short film, Dear Kim (2009), and a debate between Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi and Marxist intellectual P. Govinda Pillai at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in 1998, attempts to understand the work done by the category of “world cinema” and the institution of the film festival in the formation of the subject of the region, in this case the south Indian state of Kerala. It focuses on the linguisti…
The “Worlds” Of the Region
The “region”—understood in terms of the linguistically organized states—has been one of the central categories around which debates about cultural politics in India have been organized in the last two decades. This article argues that within this scholarship, the “region” has figured as a mirror of the nation, either as continuing from the impulses of the nation or as a response to it. Contra this, it proposes that “region” should be understood a…
Aesthetic dislocations
The centrality of South Indian cinemas in 'New Indian Cinema', one of the many cultural constellations of the turbulent and vibrant 1970s, has been widely acknowledged. Focusing on the aesthetic structuring of select moments from Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Swayamvaram, K.P. Kumaran's Athithi and P.A. Backer's Kabaneenadhi Chuvannappol, this paper investigates the contestations central to the emergence of a realist aesthetic in Malayalam cinema. It un…
The Gulf in the imagination
This article, taking up for analysis the three-decade-long relationship between the economy influenced by the Gulf and Malayalam cinema, in its industrial and narrative context, argues that the Gulf has been a significant point of reference for the imagining of a cultural identity in Kerala. It attempts to weave together three aspects-the development models that are in place, the economic conditions within which the film industry operates and the…
PE Usha, hegemonic masculinities and the public domain in Kerala
The paper attempts to work out the link between the structuring of the public domain and hegemonic masculinities in contemporary Kerala, South India. Using the debates around an incident of sexual harassment that happened in 1999, it argues for a conjunctural understanding of the contemporary where various events and moments in history are replayed through narrativization and popular memory. The paper goes on to analyse the debates around the inc…
