  • Exploring the impact of an anti-oppressive social justice internship curriculum

    Open Access•Clare Merlin‐knoblich, Sherée Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•2024•References: 28

In this qualitative case study, we implemented an anti-oppressive, social justice curriculum in a school counseling internship course and then explored its impact on participants (N = 3) as school counseling students and full-time school counselors. We identified 11 themes that reflect how the curriculum impacted participants as students and school counselors

  • The Maintenance of the U.S. Racial Hierarchy Through Judgments of Multiracial People Based on Proximity to Whiteness

Open Access•Maria M Garay, Jennifer Perry et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2023

Previous research has argued that a growing multiracial population will blur boundaries between racial groups, reducing racism and improving interracial relations. However, this is unlikely to happen if multiracial groups are judged according to their proximity to Whiteness. We examined how having White ancestry shapes status perceptions of multiracial groups. Studies 1 and 2 showed that multiracial groups with White ancestry (e.g., Black/White) …

Jennifer Perry, Michael A Glassow et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 25

As the smallest of California’s Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Island has received limited attention from archaeologists. A United States National Park Service project designed to assess its 19 known sites evolved into an island-wide survey that increased the number to 63 sites that date between 4000 and 600 years ago. Most are small shell and lithic scatters, although some are larger shell middens with greater faunal and artifact diversity. Thei…

  • Response to “Coastal Versus Interior: Some Thoughts on the Archaeology of California's Channel Islands”

Jennifer Perry, Michael A Glassow•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2016

Erlandson raises two issues of concern: our definition of “interior” and our focus on sites post-dating the earliest few millennia of human occupation of the Channel Islands. The first relates to h

  • Prehistoric Settlement in Island Interiors: Evidence From California's Santa Cruz Island

Jennifer Perry, Michael A Glassow•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 8

On California's Channel Islands, a rich body of scholarship has emerged in which the focus has been marine resources and their roles in colonization and the development of complex societies. Although this orientation has been crucial to elucidating the cultural significance of the islands, the terrestrial dimensions of island occupation have been neglected by comparison. Our research on Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the Channel Islands, is an…

  • Sample Size Requirements for Stable Clustering of Free Partition Sorting Data

Open Access•Joachim Harloff, Adrian Stringer et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2013•Cited by: 2

Convergence rates of cluster analysis results are studied for six sets of partition sorting data. Hierarchical cluster analysis, fuzzy cluster analysis, k-medoids clustering and four variants of the consensus clustering method are covered. The six data sets are kinship terms, colour plates, drug data, consultancy Web site items, social groups and prenatal tests. Convergence rates depend on the number of clusters extracted, on the clustering metho…

  • Interactions and Interiors of the Coastal Chumash

    Jennifer Perry, Colleen Delaney-Rivera•ARTICLE•California Archaeology•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Incorporating landscape archaeology and Chumash ethnohistory, we consider some lesser known facets of inter-village interaction in the northern California Bight. Utilizing the concepts of taskscapes, places, routes, and viewsheds, we evaluate archaeological data sets from Santa Cruz Island and the Oxnard Plain on the adjacent mainland. In particular, we discuss how travel routes and the distribution of resources, of both land and sea, were facili…

  • Maintaining Complex Relations with Large Cats: Maasai and Lions in Kenya and Tanzania

Mara J Goldman, Joana Roque De Pinho et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2010

Research and conservation efforts often occur in areas outside of national parks where people live, often side-by-side and sometimes in conflict with large carnivores. In Tanzania and Kenya much of this work employs a human–wildlife conflict perspective and is based in Maasai areas, where many of the few remaining lions exist. We argue that while Maasai do come into conflict with lions, their relationship with the large cats is far more complex a…

  • Spatial and Temporal Variability in Chert Exploitation on Santa Cruz Island, California

    Open Access•Jennifer E Perry, Jennifer Perry et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2010•Cited by: 14•References: 33

Chert outcrops on eastern Santa Cruz Island were of vital importance to the inhabitants of the Santa Barbara Channel region because of their comparatively limited availablity elsewhere on the California Channel Islands. Temporally diagnostic artifacts and radiocarbon dates from associated shell middens suggest that chert quarries were exploited throughout the Holocene. The importance of these quarries has been well documented in regard to microli…

  • Authentic learning in field schools: Preparing Future Members of the Archaeological Community

    Jennifer E Perry, Jennifer Perry•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 25•References: 20

The field school is one of the most common forums in which individuals obtain practical training and experience in archaeology. Given the emphasis placed on such programs, questions arise regarding their objectives, the pedagogies employed and their effectiveness in preparing students for careers in archaeology. Field schools conducted on San Clemente Island, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of California, serve as useful case studies for…
