Aditya Sarkar’s Trouble at the Mill: Factory Law and the Emergence of the Labour Question in Late Nineteenth-Century Bombay provides a granul…
Citing the Poor: Commercial Sovereignty and Capitalist Integration in Colonial Karachi
Building on recent studies that have sought to locate Karachi’s history within multiple geographies, this article analyzes how Karachi’s urban poor became used to prove Karachi’s (and by extension Sindh’s) “economic backwardness.” Most significantly, the question of Sindh’s autonomy was voiced in the institution of the Karachi Municipality, where advocates began deploying Karachi’s poor, their housing conditions, and laboring conditions to contes…
The Aboriginal Alibi: Governing Dispossession in Colonial Bombay
This article analyzes representations of the Koli as aboriginal in colonial Bombay, and explores the ends to which various actors have narrated Koli aboriginality. It examines the relationship between the historical deployment of the concept of aboriginality and its mediating role in the power of capital and state-making practices in one colonial urban context. The article shows how the Koli, as Bombay's 'aboriginals,' gained concessions that ser…
