Unchoreographed Dance
In this autoethnography, we—four Hispanic Serving Institution colleagues at the USA–Mexican frontera—share our process of building a collective where a plural, organic, vulnerable, and recursive space was created. In this space, through readings, conversations, feedings, discussions, and memories, un/anticipated stories emerge...in our unchoreographed writings, we whirl, twirl, collide, and craft our collective space, which was at once chaotic, c…
Exploring the relationship among teacher support, Advanced Placement coursework, and Latina/o students’ college and vocational self-efficacy
In this study, researchers examined the relationship among perceptions of support from high school teachers, enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP) coursework, and Latina/o college students’ vocational and college self-efficacy. Perceptions of investment and expectations from high school teachers positively predicted students’ college self-efficacy. A positive predictive relationship was also detected between students’ perceptions of accessibility…
Evaluation of the Life Satisfaction and Subjective Happiness Scales With Mexican American High School and College Students
In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of two meaningful measures of subjective well-being among Mexican American high school and college students. Participants completed the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) or Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) as measures of subjective well-being. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate structural validity. A modest one-factor structure was found for the SWLS and SH…
Making Our Way Through: Voices of Hispanic Counselor Educators
Through 23 open-ended questionnaires and 8 individual interviews, this phenomenological study explored the experiences of Hispanic men and women (N = 23) who completed doctoral degrees in counselor education. Six themes were identified: family role models, educational support, parental expectations, ethnic identity, acculturation/cultural expectations, and intrinsic motivation
Positive Psychology and Familial Factors as Predictors of Latina/o Students’ Hope and College Performance
We investigated the contributions of positive psychology and familial factors as predictors of hope and academic performance among 166 Latina/o college students enrolled at a Hispanic Serving Institution of Higher Education. The results indicated that presence of meaning in life, search for meaning in life, daily spiritual experiences, and mother’s educational level were significant predictors of goal-specific hope. None of the positive psycholog…
Self-Knowledge and Identity in a Mexican American Counseling Course: A Qualitative Exploration
This study explores the lived experiences of Mexican American graduate students who completed a course on Mexican American counseling and mental health. The experiences of Mexican American students taking a mental health course that focuses on their own ethnic group has not been previously discussed in the literature. Given the history of exclusion in the educational system and the increase in the U.S. Latina/o population, it is important to give…
