Barbara Harris, Mary Russell et al.•ARTICLE•First Peoples Child & Family…•2020

Urban Aboriginal mothers’ experiences with Family Preservation Services indicate that while such interventions ameliorate the challenges they face, poverty is not adequately addressed. Prominent are the importance of prevention; attention to process; cultural context; and attention to actual needs, however, First Nations mothers (a) feel lucky when they get things they need, (b) feel ‘inadequate’ about the inability to manage finances, and, (c) p…

  • Sewing in the lives of immigrant women

Christina Boerema, Mary Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 8

In 2003, 38 immigrant women were interviewed about sewing and contributed sewn items to an exhibition at the Migration Museum, South Australia. Secondary analysis of the interviews was undertaken to better understand the meaning of sewing to some immigrant women. The four overarching themes that emerged reveal that the women perceive sewing as an enduring part of their lives, a means of expression, keeping their culture and very useful. Sewing ha…

  • Skeletal differences between black and white men and their relevance to body composition estimates

Open Access•Laura Gerace, Antonios Aliprantis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1994

Skeletal differences exist between closely matched Black and White women, although it is unknown if similar differences also exist between Black and White men after controlling for age, body weight, and stature. The aim of this study was twofold: to test the hypothesis that Black men have greater bone mass, higher bone mineral density, and longer limbs compared to White men of similar age, weight, and height; and second, to establish if ethnic va…

This study seeks to discover some of the characteristics of the first group of board members. This includes their co…

  • Body fat by dual photon absorptiometry: Comparisons with traditional methods in Asians, blacks, and whites

Open Access•Jack Wang, Mary Russell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

Measurement of body fat by dual photon absorptiometry (Fat DPA ) is based on the physical principles of differential attenuation of discrete photons by fat and other soft tissue components. The three traditional methods of measuring fat are indirect, in that they depend on measuring the fat free mass (FFM) based on the assumed constancy of water, potassium, and density in the FFM. Comparison of Fat DPA with fat measured by each of the indirect me…

  • The Blessings of a Good Thick Skirt: Women Travellers and Their World

    Mary Russell•BOOK•Blessings of a Good Thick Skirt•1986

What drew Annie Taylor and Alexandra David-Neal to Tibet, when it was still cut off from the world and so hostile to foreigners, and particularly female ones, that they had to wear male Tibetan dress for protection? What did Hester Stanhope and Gertrude Bell, two such different women, find so compelling about the desert life of the East? What possessed Mary, Duchess of Bedford, to take up flying at the age of 60 - or Naomi James to sail around th…

Training of the second group was delayed for 5 weeks to provide a control for the training of the fi…

  • Clinical Ratings: Relationship to Objective Psychometric Assessment in Individuals with Dementia

    Open Access•Robert I Block, Marlene DeVoe et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

The efficacy of drugs for the treatment of memory impairment in elderly patients with dementia is frequently established by a combination of subjective and objective psychological assessments. Often these assessments produce conflicting results. To throw some light on the relation between subjective and objective assessments, we examined the correlations of subjective ratings on the Sandoz Clinical Assessment—Geriatric (SCAG) and scores on object…

The relationship between measures of worker effectiveness in a therapeutic telephone intervention and whether a caller shows for a scheduled appointment can be used to assess the variables that contribute to "successful" telephone counseling. This study replicated the findings of a previous investigation in showing that the motivation of a caller in response to the question of a referral was positively correlated with "showing" for the appointmen…
