A New Perspective on Women's Anger
Anger experience and expression have historically been framed dichotomously (anger held inside the person versus anger let out in overt expression) or in other ways that may be oversimplified and have limited applicability for women. A newer model, women's anger diversion, is applied to the case of a Caucasian woman psychotherapy client, presenting with stress-related physiological symptoms and marital dissatisfaction, to clarify its use in clini…
Family problem solving
Working with the families of young offenders may often be the best method of helping those young offenders to change. Sometimes, however, social workers and others who work with young offenders are reluctant to work with family groups because they may feel that they lack skills in family counselling. This article presents a case study which illustrates a family counselling intervention. The case study uses Family Problem Solving, a method which i…
Anger and Depression in Girls and Boys
A growing body of literature supports the link between anger suppression and depression and females' greater likelihood than males of demonstrating both. Anger suppression was hypothesized to be involved in the development of gendered identity for girls, specifically by rendering girls more likely to experience depression. Employing an ethnically diverse sample of public school children, differences between fifth through ninth grade girls and boy…
Use of the Collaborative Drawing Technique in School Counseling Practicum

School counselors, however, often lack training in family systems theory, because counselor training programs tend to use individual counseling models. When used in a school counselor practicum course, the Collaborative Drawing Technique (CDT…
Participation and Withdrawal Among Fourth-Grade Pupils
Pupil participation in elementary school classrooms is essential for learning to occur, while nonparticipation in early grades can initiate a cycle that culminates in total withdrawal—dropping out—in later years. This study explores the nature of participation and nonparticipation among fourth-grade students. A sample of 1388 youngsters was rated by their teachers on a questionnaire assessing nonparticipatory behavior, minimal adequate effort, an…
Measuring Participation among Elementary Grade Students
Research on children at risk for school failure emphasizes the need to understand the ways in which pupils are engaged or disengage from class and school activities. This paper describes the development of a teacher rating scale that assesses the form and extent of participation among elementary grade pupils. The Student Participation Questionnaire was tested with a large sample of Grade-4 teachers and their pupils. Three reliable scales were obt…
