    Elise T Toomey, Eileen S Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2001

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between parental conflict and young adults' levels of intimacy. The participants were 317 college students. The hypotheses that offspring from high-conflict families would have less favorable attitudes toward intimacy and more sexual partners than those from low-conflict families were not supported. Also not supported was the prediction that females who had experienced high family conflict…

    Open Access•Eric J Sydell, Eileen S Nelson•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2000•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Contemporary society is beset with subtle racial tensions. Modern racism is a form of racism often found in modern, politically correct America. In this form of racism, racist beliefs are often expressed only indirectly. In the present paper, race differences in attitudes about and perceptions of racism were examined through the use of a survey. Results showed several differences in the way Blacks and Whites perceive race relations on a universit…

Male and female participants were surveyed on abortion attitudes, commitment, and abortion experience. Results revealed a normal distribution of abortion attitudes rejecting the notion that the vast majority of the sample would have significantly pro-choice views. No significant difference was found in overall abortion attitudes of males vs. females, however, individuals with direct abortion experience were found to have significantly stronger pr…

    Stacey L Sinclair, Eileen S Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1998

The present study examined the impact of parental divorce on college students from divorced and intact families on measures of intimacy and relationship beliefs. Analyses indicated that students from divorced families did not experience lower levels of intimacy than children from intact families. With the exception of one relationship belief, students from divorced families did not hold more dysfunctional relationship beliefs than students from i…

  • Expectations of Marriage Among College Students From Intact and Non-Intact Homes

    Gabrielle D Jones, Eileen S Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1997

This study examined expectations of marriage in college students, 244 of whom were from intact homes and 61 of whom were from non-intact homes. Both groups of students completed questionnaires which assess love styles, levels of romanticism, and expectations of marriage. Results indicate that the two groups have similar breakdowns in expectations of marriage (pessimistic, realistic, or idealistic). Additionally, it was found that students who rep…

    Eileen S Nelson, Shirley L Krieger•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1997•Cited by: 34•References: 21

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a gay men and lesbian peer panel as an educational strategy in changing homophobic attitudes among 190 college students. The students were administered a modified version of the Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Scale before and after the intervention. Results indicated a significant difference between pre- and posttest scores. Men had more negative attitudes toward homosexuals than did…

    Stacy R Markland, Eileen S Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1994

This study investigated the relationship between perceived familial conflict and the identity of young adults. One hundred and eighty four college students served as participants. Two hypotheses were formulated: (a) an individual's perception of the presence of high familial conflict in any of the developmental stages preceding Erikson's fifth would result in lower identity, and (b) an interaction would exist between the individual's perception o…

Eileen S Nelson, Jamie Allison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1993

This study investigated how parental divorce during Erikson's identity stage may alter a child's ability to successfully resolve the identity and intimacy crises. Successful progression through the identity and intimacy crises was determined by the Personal Orientation Inventory (Shostrom, 1974). Family functionality during adolescence was also assessed, using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (Olson, 1985). Subjects from home…
