Facilitators and Barriers to Home-Based Long-Acting Injectable Antiretroviral Therapy: Clinician Perspectives from the Invite-Home Study
Hispanics’ Retirement Transitions and Differences by Nativity
Objective: This study examines differences in retirement decisions between older Hispanics and non-Hispanics, with a special focus on the role of nativity. Methods: We use 1998-2012 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. We estimate survival models of retirement and compare retirement transitions for U.S.-born Hispanics, foreign-born Hispanics, non-Hispanic Whites, and non-Hispanic Blacks. Results: Foreign-born Hispanics retire significantly l…
Phased Retirement and Workplace Flexibility for Older Adults: Opportunities and Challenges
Phased retirement programs that allow older workers to reduce their hours and responsibilities and pursue more flexible work schedules could satisfy both the employee's desire for flexibility and the employer's need to maintain an experienced workforce. However, few employers have established formal programs, because they often complicate the provision of other benefits and might violate antidiscrimination rules. For example, federal laws limit r…
The Strains and Drains of Long-Term Care
Before the end of their lives, nearly 7 in 10 of today's 65-year-olds will need help with basic personal care-bathing, dressing, and eating-and with household responsibilities essential for independent living, like shopping and preparing hot meals The financial, emotional, and physical costs of providing long-term care often overwhelm families; unpaid family members supply most of it, struggling to balance these duties with work and other respons…
The Impact of Elder Care on Women's Labor Supply
Adult daughters traditionally have served as primary caregivers for frail unmarried adults, but the levels of care they have provided in the past may interfere with their growing work responsibilities. This paper examines the impact of time transfers to elderly parents on labor supply at midlife. Using a sample of women ages 55 to 67 in the Health and Retirement Study, we estimate panel data models of annual hours of paid work controlling for the…
Health Insurance Costs and Early Retirement Decisions
The loss of health insurance may be an important component of the cost of retirement, especially for workers without retiree health insurance coverage. The authors find that insurance costs significantly reduce retirement rates for full-time wage and salary workers ages 51 to 61. Simulations suggest that a $1,000 increase in the net present value of health insurance premium costs reduces the probability of early retirement by 0.17 percentage poin…
Does Informal Care from Adult Children Reduce Nursing Home Admissions for the Elderly
Despite the policy importance, particularly as society ages, little is known about the impact of informal care on nursing home admissions. This paper jointly models the receipt of regular help from adult children and subsequent nursing home care, using data from the Study of Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD). Results indicate that frequent help from children with basic personal care reduces the likelihood of nursing home use …
Economic and cultural influences on the decision to leave home in Peninsular Malaysia
Although the departure of children from the parental home is an important life-cycle event, few studies have investigated nest-leaving in developing countries. Using retrospective data from the Second Malaysian Family Life Survey, we estimate hazard models of nest-leaving in Peninsular Malaysia. We find that the departure of children, especially sons, responds to economic incentives, including housing costs, family businesses, education, and econ…
Wage Declines among Older Men
We examine the evidence on whether real wages decline with age among older men. While the general human capital model of wage growth over the life cycle predicts that wages will fall as workers approach the end of their career, alternative models of wage growth do not predict these wage declines. We find that in longitudinal estimates of age-wage profiles wage declines only set in for workers in their 60s. Furthermore, these longitudinal declines…
Predictive Validity of Svib Pharmacist Scales
The predictive validity of the old and new men's Pharmacist scales and the new women's Pharmacist scale on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank was investigated for 279 male and 76 female pharmacy students. Each of the three scales significantly differentiated between graduates and nongraduates from the pharmacy program. Separate sex norms appeared to be necessary for the two men's scales, but not for the new women's scale. The women's scale most…
Influence of Playback Techniques on Counselor Preformance
Study was made of training impact of different electronic playback techniques on ratings of student counselor performance. Thirty-two upperclass university females were randomly divided into four playback treatment groups: (a) audio-video, (b) audio, (c) video, and (d) no playback received. Four underclass university females served as trained clients. All student counselors interviewed two different trained clients in two 20-minute sessions separ…
