Open Access•ANNE MARTIN, Lauren O’connell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2026

We combined data from five cohorts of mothers of young children across three cities to understand how COVID-19 affected parenting among predominantly Black and Latine families with low incomes. We examined whether mothers reported that their parenting got worse, got better, or stayed the same; drew on a qualitative substudy to identify themes describing parenting experiences; and used quantitative data to identify psychosocial characteristics ass…

However, little is known about the differences between those with OUD who do and do not smoke cigarettes. Objectives: Our aim was to investigate differences between treatment-seeking adults with OUD who did and did not smoke. Methods: Participants (N = 568; 30% female) completed a battery…

  • Racial differences in social support

Margaret L Griffin, Maryann Amodeo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2006

Social support was examined among 290 Black and White women recruited from the community. We hypothesized that (1) social support, adjusted for social class, would not vary by race and (2) social support would be related to well-being. Standardized measures were administered, examining support provided by friends versus kin separately. Multivariate models showed that Black women reported similar numbers of kin and fewer friends than Whites, while…

  • Methodological Issues when Developing Prevention Programs for Low Income, Urban Adolescents

Andrew W Safyer, Margaret L Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Project Opportunity is a prevention program for low-income, urban adolescents. It tests an innovative conceptual model that utilizes the workplace both to access teens who are dependents of low-wage employees and to provide services to the youths and parents at the site. Methodological lessons learned from implementing the Project are presented. Research considerations in selection of subjects, measures, and procedures must be adapted to match th…

  • Parental alcoholism and other family disruptions

Maryann Amodeo, Margaret L Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1997

Adult outcomes were investigated in 14 pairs of African-American and white daughters of alcoholic parents. On the basis of four outcome factors, subjects were divided into three sister-pair categories: well-adjusted, impaired, and mixed. Interviews and standardized questionnaires showed that family-of-origin variables contributing to the impaired adult outcomes included parental psychiatric problems and childhood abuse or neglect
