Vocal Deliriums (Five Proposals)
Love, race and resistance
One of the best-known facts about Simone is that by late 1963 she had become a militant activist for Black rights. But if one take things back to Simone's roots, the issues become still more pointed and more bracing. Fugitivity indexes whatever resists such naming, categorising and constricting because it is impossible to truly locate or emplace this objectified being, in this case the Black being, who is denied personhood yet resists that very d…
Music Histories from the Edge
Fugitive Voice
This essay proposes that current-day notions of fugitivity, understood in the terms Fred Moten proposes as a category of the irregular that escapes easy representations and predications, can undiscipline music histories in productive ways. Among these: it can inflect musicological thinking through attention to sonic remainders of haunted pasts; it can decenter understandings of the aesthetic; and it can lead to more nuanced thinking about the imb…

Opera and Sovereignty: Transforming Myths in Eighteenth-Century Italy
The Courtesan’s Arts: Cross-Cultural Perspectives
Courtesans, hetaeras, tawaif-s, ji-s--these women have exchanged artistic graces, elevated conversation, and sexual favors with male patrons throughout history and around the world. Of a different world than common prostitutes, courtesans deal in artistic and intellectual pleasures in ways that are wholly interdependent with their commerce in sex. In pre-colonial India, courtesans cultivated a wide variety of artistic skills, including magic, mus…

Stories and the Rhetoric of Contrariety: Subtexts of Organizing (Change)
Stories are an important part of organizational life that scholars have studied from many different perspectives. In this paper, we contribute a new way of exploring the meaning of stories. We use a concept from classical rhetoric, the enthymeme, to help reveal the particular underlying "logic" contained in the story form, and we show that the construction of this logic accounts, in part, for the engaging nature of the stories. We show that story…

Strategies for Interpreting Qualitative Data
This useful book outlines four key strategies for interpreting qualitative data: ethnomethodology; semiotics; dramaturgy; and deconstruction. To demonstrate, the author applies the techniques of each method to a single data set, highlighting the differences in results

The Academy of Domenico Venier, Music's Literary Muse in Mid-Cinquecento Venice
I in the Mid-Sixteenth Century Venetian writers, artists, scholars, and musicians came increasingly to play out their cultural ideals within informal academies. These academies made no bylaws or statutes, nor did they keep the sorts of membership lists, minutes, and systematic records that were to become commonplace by the end of the century. In essence they were regular gatherings, chiefly in private homes, for discussion, debate, and performanc…
Order Without Design: Information Production and Policy Making
In this lively and, ultimately, disturbing study of policy analysts who are employed in bureaucracies, the author finds a startling paradox. The analysts know that the papers they so painstakingly prepare will not be used; as one analyst remarked, "Either it won't get done in time, or it won't be good enough, or the person who wanted it done will have left and no one will know what to do with it, or the issue will no longer exist." Yet the analys…
