  • New scheduling strategies and production culture in public service television in the digital era: The case of DR and TV 2 in Denmark

Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 25

This article addresses the development of new scheduling practices within public service media (PSM) in the Nordic, focusing on DR and TV 2 in Denmark. These practices relate to in-house broadcaster-video-on-demand-services (BVoDs). Our findings show, first, that television's time-structured identity and liveness are re-configured for a mainstream audience as opposed to the segmented audiences approach of the earlier multi-channel era. Second, we…

  • Time and timing-A methodological perspective on production analysis

Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In recent years, media production studies have grown into a thriving field of research, which has given rise to a discussion of the theoretical and methodological approaches it employs (Paterson et al, 2016; Frandsen, 2007; Bruun, 2010, 2016b). This article is a contribution to this development. The focal point is a discussion of how time and timing are important in media production research. The article points out that time is not just a matter …

  • Re-scheduling Television in the Digital Era

Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•BOOK•Re-Scheduling Television in the…•2019

This book explores how the television industry is adapting its production culture and professional practises of scheduling to an increasingly non-linear television paradigm, a testing ground where different communicative tools are tried out in a volatile industry. Based on four case studies the book argues that a new television paradigm is being produced from within the multiplatform television organisations themselves in order to adapt to changi…

  • Producing the on-air schedule in Danish public service television in the digital era

    Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 21

This article presents results from a production study on how the on-air schedule is changing in the digital era at the Danish public service broadcaster, TV 2. TV 2's multichannel and increasingly non-linear television portfolio has a profound impact on the production practices involved in order to meet the public service obligations. The analysis shows that the producers develop new ways to secure an audience of scale under these conditions. So …

  • The Qualitative Interview in Media Production Studies

Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•CHAPTER•Advancing Media Production Research•2016

In media production studies the qualitative research interview is frequently used as a tool in the generation of data, and thus in building the analytical object. However, the research contributions—including my own work—contain only to a very limited degree methodological reflections on what characterizes this kind of research interview and its application in the given analytical context. This somewhat paradoxical situation is particularly strik…

  • Conceptualizations of the audience in political talk show production

    Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This article presents and discusses the changing conceptualizations of the audience at work in the production culture of political talk shows in PSM (public service media) in Denmark. Based on findings from a case study of the Danish political talk show Debatten [The Debate], this article suggests that an audience-as-social-segments model seems to be emerging in the PSM organization DR. The model is used to manage the medium–viewer relationship i…

  • Genre in media production

    Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 7

How do we explain changes in media genres? Are they the result of economic, technological or other kinds of structural forces; or are they the result of the change-producing agency of the media producers? And how are changes in media texts connected to contextual conditions for media production on micro-, meso- or macro levels? This article suggests that a theoretical approach using a pragmatic and socio-cognitive understanding of genre will help…

    Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2006

Hanne Bruun: A global TV-genre and the complexity of proximity Television is often considered an agent of cultural globalization, and the American television industry is often equated with globalization in part due to the ability of its genre’s to travel. Media reception studies show the viewers’ expectations of a genre are influenced by these television genres. But such studies also show that the cultural origin of television products plays an i…

  • Mediegenre, identifikation og reception

Open Access•Kirsten Frandsen, Henriette Bruun et al.•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Open Access•Henriette Bruun, Hanne Bruun et al.•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•1991•Cited by: 4
