  • A Class Act

    Open Access•Clare Hogg, Christopher Hogg•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this interview, actor Julie Hesmondhalgh reflects on her rich body of work in British TV drama, connecting her own career trajectory with a consideration of wider industry developments in casting and representation, diversity and inclusion. With extended reference to Coronation Street (1960-) and Doctor Who (1963-1989, 2005-), Hesmondhalgh discusses how far UK TV drama production has come in tackling systemic inequalities and exclusions, while…

  • Trans TV dossier, III

    Open Access•M Goddard, Michael N Goddard et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2020•References: 3

When we organised the conference on Trans TV at the University of Westminster in 2017, our aims were both to bridge frequently fragmented discussions of contemporary televisual industries, audiences, fandom, representation and content, and to probe whether in the age of internet-distributed streaming television there were more spaces for expressions of diversity than had previously been the case during the network television era, or even in the s…

  • Introduction

Open Access•Edited And Introduced By Michael Goddard, E Goddard et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2020•References: 4

This is the second more substantial part of the introduction to the final Trans TV special issue, distributed across issues 15.2 and 15.3 of this journal. As well as introducing the contents of this issue, we reflect in this introduction on the Trans TV project as it has developed since 2017, via an engagement with two key televisual texts namely Transparent (2014-2019) and Pose (2018-). We argue that this certainly reflects positive developments…

  • Streaming intersectionality

    Open Access•M Goddard, Michael N Goddard et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Following the first Trans TV dossier, this dossier shifts the focus from transformations of television industries, institutions, fans and audiences to questions of queer and trans* aesthetics and representation in contemporary television. It entails an intersectional approach, but one that looks at what happens to intersectional genealogies in the era of streamed, internet-distributed television. Do the post-network or even post-medium transforma…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•M Goddard, Michael N Goddard et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This dossier is the first of two to emerge out of the recent Trans TV conference held at the University of Westminster in September 2017. The focus of this specific dossier is in tracking the latest developments and emergent trends affecting contemporary television, especially as delivered via new online streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon. The article and series of interventions within this dossier set out to challenge both popular and…

  • Acting in British Television

Open Access•Tom Cantrell, Clare Hogg et al.•BOOK•Acting in British Television•2017

This book offers the first in-depth exploration of acting processes in contemporary British television production. Centred around sixteen new interviews with celebrated British actors, including Rebecca Front, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Ken Stott, Penelope Wilton and John Hannah, this rich resource delves behind the scenes of a range of British television programmes in order to examine how actors build their characters for television, how they work on s…

  • Returning to an old question

Open Access•Tom Cantrell, Clare Hogg et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This article argues for acknowledging and exploring actors' processes in critical considerations of television drama. Theatre studies boasts a tradition of research privileging the actor, including a century's worth of actor-training manuals, academic works observing rehearsals and performances and actor accounts. However, such considerations within television studies are relatively nascent. Drawing upon continuing drama as a fertile case study f…

  • Ultraviolet Vision May Enhance the Ability of Reindeer to Discriminate Plants in Snow

    Open Access•N J C Tyler, Glen Jeffery et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

In reindeer/caribou (Rangifer tarandus), the lens and cornea of the eye transmit ultraviolet (UV) light, and the retinae respond to it electro-physiologically. Here we tie this finding to the unusual visual environment experienced by these animals and propose that their sensitivity to UV light enhances vision at the low luminance characteristic of the polar winter. For such visual enhancement to occur, it is essential that functional components o…

  • The Punk-Rock King

    Open Access•Clare Hogg, Christopher Hogg•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2013•References: 14

Music has a powerful indexical ability to evoke particular times and places. Such an ability has been exploited at length by the often-elaborate soundscapes of period films, which regularly utilise incidental scores and featured period songs to help root their narrative action in past times, and to immerse their audiences in the sensibilities of a different age. However, this article will begin to examine the ways in which period film soundtracks…
