Zuckerberg’s Smile, or Presence in the Age of Digital Technologies
AI and AR do not merely coexist with the archive and repertoire as modes of transmission but profoundly alter them and prove profoundly anti-archival. “Live” transmission from body to body is radically altered by digital technologies that simulate presence. “Feeling truly present with another person,” Mark Zuckerberg stated, “is the ultimate dream of social media.” He aspires to create an avatar that can simulate an emotion that he cannot express…
Dead capital
Bom Retiro 958 metros, a performance by Brazil's theatre company, Teatro da Vertigem, leads us on a walk through São Paulo's phantasmagoric world of things—things in a state of consumer glory, in use, in disuse, and in various stages of disintegration. This experiential piece moves us through a whirl of desire and longings, challenging many of our assumptions about what is dead and what is alive, about our desire to accumulate, transform, archive…
Being ¡Presente! An Interview with Diana Taylor by Kyle B. T. Lambelet
What can we do when apparently nothing can be done, and doing nothing is not an option?" Theologian Kyle Lambelet and performance theorist Diana Taylor discuss the challenge and possibilities of presence within systems that seem to allow no alternative. Drawing from their recently published books, which share a common title, Lambelet and Taylor explore the promise of ritual, performance, liturgy, memes, and more for resisting deadly hegemonies

The Decision Dilemma: Academic Freedom in the Age of Monsanto
Impersonation is a practice of masquerading that troubles the boundaries between performance and the law. In 2013, The Yes Men, Diana Taylor, and Jesusa Rodríguez engaged in a digital impersonation of the agrochemical and biotechnology giant Monsanto in Chiapas, Mexico. This action led to debates about when impersonation qualifies as performance and when it counts as fraud, which raised questions of academic freedom, codes of ethics, and conflict…

Archiving the “Thing”: Teatro da Vertigem’s Bom Retiro 958 metros
An archive is a place, a thing/object, and a practice. But can “things” be archived at all, or do they rather belong to a world of endless transformation? Do “things” have a life of their own that exceeds the limits of the archive? A massive immersive performance, Bom Retiro 958 metros by Brazil’s theatre company Teatro da Vertigem, suggests that matter, although martyred by constant change and transformation, resists disappearance and calls into…

Performando a cidadania: Artistas Vão Às Ruas

The Relationship of Two Types of Trauma Exposure to Current Physical and Psychological Symptom Distress in a Community Sample of Colombian Women: Why Interpersonal Violence Deserves More Attention
Our purpose in this study was to examine the relationship between interpersonal violence and background traumas and symptom distress in a community sample of Colombian women (N = 217). We utilized the Life Stressor Checklist-Revised (LSC-R) to measure lifetime interpersonal violence (IPV) and background trauma exposure and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) to measure current symptom distress. Although both exposures were common in this sample, IP…
Afterword: War Play
On 27 February 2009, The Essays for this PMLA issue on war were coming in, against a background of various wars. The Iraq War had claimed over 100,000 civilian lives. The newly elected Obama administration vowed to amp up efforts in Afghanistan. The rubble in Gaza still smoldered from the recent Israeli attacks. The ongoing conflict in Darfur had already left 300,000 people dead, not to mention the 2.5 million displaced. When President George W. …

Remapping Genre through Performance: From “American” to “Hemispheric” Studies
Performance as a genre allows for alternative mappings, providing a set of strategies and conventions that allow scholars to see practices that scripted genres might occlude. Like other genres, performance encompasses a broad range of rehearsed and codified behaviors, such as dance, theater, music recitals, sports events, and rituals. A performance lens allows scholars to look at acts, things, and ideas as performance. Looking at America as perfo…

Peer support, PMS, and stress: A pilot study
Premenstrual symptoms (PMS) may be aggravated by social or environmental stressors. An explanatory model incorporating the effects of stress, social support, and menstrual cyclicity is proposed. This paper discusses the effectiveness of social support as an adjunct to conventional treatment for PMS, and describes the results of a pilot study. The results indicate that peer social support, in combination with other treatments, may serve to educate…
Theater and Terrorism: "Griselda Gambaro's "Information for Foreigners
Questions about the place of theater in a well-run society, originally debated by Plato and Aristotle, take on a new meaning, as well as a special urgency, in criminal states in which theaters are bombed and spectacular acts of cruelty exceed the boundaries of the stage. In Argentina during the 1970s both State and anti-State terrorism competed to capture the public's attention and control its behavior by staging highly dramatic acts of violence.…

There are two main reasons why I wanted to write about Cielo de abajo (The Sky Below), a brilliant two-woman, one skeleton prehispanic cabaret by Jesusa Rodriguez and Liliana Felipe which ran until end of October 1992 in Mexico City. For one thing, production marked reinauguration of one of Mexico's fine small independent theatres, El Teatro de la Capilla (Chapel Theatre), by two of Mexico's most imaginative and radical women directors-actors-per…
