    Jeffrey Shantz•ARTICLE•Socialism and Democracy•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 1

It is sometimes said that while anti-capitalist and alternative globalization movements are clear on what we do not want, we are less clear on what we do want (socialism, anarchism, specifics). Certainly, recent movements have not been as effective as their predecessors (labor in the 1910s and 1930s; the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s) in sustaining the sorts of practices ‐ intellectual and material ‐ that put into effect aspects of the …

  • Scarcity and the Emergence of Fundamentalist Ecology

    Open Access•Jeffrey Shantz•ARTICLE•Critique of Anthropology•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article discusses the emergence of fundamentalist environmentalism in the mid-1980s. Fundamentalist versions of ecology, exemplified most notably by the theory of `deep ecology' and the social movement Earth First!, have mistakenly proposed social scarcity as a means to overcome natural scarcity. This confusion has led fundamentalist ecologists away from an analysis of the power relations which underlie social inequality and the destruction …

  • Judi Bari and 'the feminization of Earth First: The Convergence of Class, Gender and Radical Environmentalism

    Jeffrey Shantz•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•2002•Cited by: 2

This paper addresses feminist materialism as political practice through a case study of IWW-Earth First! Local 1, the late Judi Bari's organization of a radical ecology/timber workers’ union in the ancient redwood forests of Northern California. Rejecting the Earth First! mythology of timber workers as ‘enemies’ of nature, Bari sought to unite workers and environmentalists in pursuit of sustainable forestry practices against the devastating appro…

    Open Access•Jeffrey Shantz, Jeffrey A Shantz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Profiles the development of the project IWW/Earth First Local 1, a group which brought loggers and environmentalists together in an attempt to combine labour and ecology issues. Describes anarchosyndicalist ideas that formed the basis of this alliance, suggesting that these have some merit for present day ecologists. Considers the common ground shared by labour and ecology movements and presents some learnings from the project for future mainstre…
