Robustness of Latent Profile Analysis to Measurement Noninvariance Between Profiles
Latent profile analysis (LPA) identifies heterogeneous subgroups based on continuous indicators that represent different dimensions. It is a common practice to measure each dimension using items, create composite or factor scores for each dimension, and use these scores as indicators of profiles in LPA. In this case, measurement models for dimensions are not included and potential noninvariance across latent profiles is not modeled in LPA. This s…
Comparing Chinese youth with American youth on adjustment
In this article, we used results from two studies to show the need to go beyond linguistic equivalence to establish construct validity and measurement invariance in cross‐cultural research. Study 1 examined Rosenberg Self‐Esteem (RSE; 10 items) data from 156 Mainland Chinese youth ( M = 13.8 years, SD = .53) and 213 Chinese‐American youth ( M = 13.6 years, SD = 2.1) from high socioeconomic status (SES) families. The Chinese translation of the RSE…
The effect of academic performance, individualistic and collectivistic orientation on Chinese youth’s adjustment
Is Adoption Equally Beneficial to Different Aspects of Youth's Behavioral Health? Findings From Comparing Adopted Chinese Youth With Non-Adopted American and Chinese Youth
To test whether adoption differentially benefited adopted youth's behavioral health, 243 female American youth who were adopted from China were compared with 234 non-adopted American peers, and 955 non-adopted Chinese peers living in China on four composite scales: School Problems, Internalizing Problems, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Personal Adjustment. The adopted youth were from high socioeconomic status (SES) families,…
High family SES and youth adjustment
Linguistic Equivalence, Construct Validity, But Lack Measurement Invariance
In this study, we illustrated issues related to measure invariance in cross-cultural research involving instrument translation between Chinese and English. We translated and back-translated the third edition of the Behavioral Assessment for Children-Self Report of Personality (BASC-3-SRP) and administered it to 1,574 youth in China and 512 youth in the United States. We found that despite a rigorous approach to achieving linguistic equivalence, s…
