  • Empathy Trends in American Youth Between 1979 and 2018

Open Access•Sara Konrath, Alison Jane Martingano et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2025

Previous research has found declining dispositional empathy among American youth from 1979 to 2009. We update these trends until 2018, using three datasets. Study 1 presents a cross-temporal meta-analysis of undergraduates’ empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index), finding significant cubic trends over time: perspective taking (PT) and empathic concern (EC) both increased since 2009. Study 2 conceptually replicated these findings using nationally…

  • Serial reproduction of narratives preserves emotional appraisals

Fritz Breithaupt, Binyan Li et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2022

We conducted the largest multiple-iteration retelling study to date (12,840 participants and 19,086 retellings) with two different studies that test how emotional appraisals are transmitted across retellings. We use a novel Bayesian model that tracks changes across retellings. Study 1 examines the preservation of appraisals of happy and sad stories and finds that retellings preserve the story's degree of happiness and sadness even when length shr…

  • A Quantum Walk Model For Emotion Transmission In Serial Reproduction Of Narratives

Jiaqi Huang, Jiaqi Adam Huang et al.•PREPRINT•2022

A quantum walk model is developed for emotion transmission in serial reproduction of narratives. The readers' emotions are represented by density operators, and the influences of the narratives on the readers' emotions are modeled by applying the controlled unitary operators to the density operators. The performance of the quantum model is evaluated on a large corpus of narratives, compared to that of the Bayesian Markov chain model. The quantum …

  • The Effect of Fiction vs Nonfiction in the Digital Era

Maria Triantafyllopoulos, Binyan Li et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 43

Do people comprehend texts differently based on genre expectation, i.e. whether they are instructed to read a text as fiction or nonfiction? In earlier studies conducted before the prevalence of digital and online reading, texts labeled as nonfiction demonstrated greater situational-model comprehension (gist), while the same text labeled as fiction demonstrated greater surface-level comprehension (word memory). Here we report three online experim…

  • The bad things we do because of empathy

    Open Access•Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Empathy is usually seen as a prosocial and morally positive influence on behaviour. This article provides an overview of cases of negative acts motivated by empathy. It includes discussions of polarizations that are fueled by side-taking and empathy, selfish forms of empathy (such as sadistic empathy, vampirism, and helicopter parenting), and filtered empathy (using identification with a third person as a medium to have empathy with another). The…

  • Goethe’s Conscience

    Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2014

Goethe’s Conscience Fritz Breithaupt1 (bio) For Rainer Nägele Any student or reader of the works by Rainer Nägele knows his insistence on what he calls surface reading. Those who have had the privilege of sitting in his classes will also know his reactions to metaphors of depth, hidden meanings, and truths to be uncovered: They do not belong to the practice of reading. Reading is to discover the textual connections that are out in the open and on…

  • The Birth of Narrative Out of the Spirit of the Excuse

    Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2011•References: 17

This article argues that the origin of narrative lies in the "excuse and that the structure of the excuse marks what we nowadays consider as narrative. The defining feature of the excuse is that it provides a counter-version to the master story of the accusation and thereby opens a multiplicity of versions. Given an excuse, there is not just a plurality of possible plot developments but also a consideration of linguistic nuances when weighing res…

  • Einspruch gegen die Selbstregulierung

    Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2008

    Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1999•Cited by: 1

  • Echo

    Fritz Breithaupt•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1995
