  • Research Note: Texas's Operation Lone Star Migrant Busing Program Increased Hispanic Homelessness in Destination Cities

    Open Access•W J Scarborough, Cynthia Brito et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2026•References: 12

As part of the largest and most expensive state-run immigration program in U.S. history, the state of Texas bused more than 100,000 immigrants to six Democratic-led cities with sanctuary ordinances between 2022 and 2024. In this research note, we examine whether the Texas migrant busing program led to an increase in Hispanic homelessness in cities that received buses chartered by the state. Using point-in-time data measuring local homeless popula…

  • The Mobile Politics of Emotions and Social Movement in Oaxaca, Mexico: Mobile Politics of Emotions and Social Movement in Oaxaca

Open Access•Iván Arenas, Iván Darío Rojas Arenas•ARTICLE•Antipode•2015•Cited by: 16•References: 12

In light of recent debates between affect and emotions in geography, this article focuses on how the emotional landscape of spatial struggles in Oaxaca articulated people together, thereby generating solidarities and a collective sociality offering the potentiality of interconnection that geographers of affect emphasize. Through an analysis of a women's march, I demonstrate how social movements move people, mobilizing them both physically and emo…

  • Assembling the Multitude: Material Geographies of Social Movements from Oaxaca to Occupy

Open Access•Iván Arenas, Iván Darío Rojas Arenas•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 31

In light of the abstract theorizations of scholars of transnational social movement networks-as exemplified by Hardt and Negri's Multitude-in this paper I argue for the power of grounded, material engagements with the practices of protest of social movements to transform not just political spaces, but our theoretical landscapes. I compare the practice of setting up and maintaining encampments in the Oaxaca and Occupy movements to argue that the s…

  • Don't Fence Me In: Barricade Sociality and Political Struggles in Mexico and Latvia

Open Access•D Dzenovska, Iván Arenas et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2012•Cited by: 15•References: 17

In 1991, barricades in the streets of Rīga, Latvia, shielded important landmarks from Soviet military units looking to prevent the dissolution of the USSR; in 2006, barricades in the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico, defended members of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca from paramilitary incursions. We employ these two cases to compare the historically specific public socialities and politics formed through spatial and material practices in …
