  • Surface and Retreat

    Jerry C Zee, Jerry Zee•ARTICLE•English Language Notes•2023

This essay is an experiment in figuring the pandemic through its reconfigurations of Chineseness. It departs from the Sinophobic cliché that conflates race, geopolitics, and epidemiology: the “China Virus” and its cloud of cognate slurs. It considers the slogan-slur as both an epithet and a conceptual and political challenge to imagine the pandemic as it is lived, still, as a disorientation of Asian and Asian American life, time, and death. • Liquidity and Liquefaction

    Open Access•Jerry C Zee, Jerry Zee•ARTICLE•Environmental Humanities•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 18

This article considers the collision of earthly and monetary phase shifts. It situates itself in Richmond, British Columbia, a seam where multiple and disparate processes of landing collaborate in the ongoing transformation and modulation of the earth's surface. It poses a Chinese-funded construction boom on an island in western Canada as a geological formation, a physical outcropping at the collision of nineteenth-century Chinese terraforming la…

  • Rise into Dust

Jerry C Zee, Jerry Zee•ARTICLE•Made in China Journal•2022

In early April 2001, two closely spaced pulses of the Siberian jetstream blew into semi-arid Inner Mongolia, whipping surface sands into the air.The western reaches of the region, at the frontier with Mongolia, were bare of grass. The convergence of years of drought, a mounting crisis of land degradation, and an unusually warm winter left vast tracts of the region's sands exposed in the early spring. In these conditions, an early thaw of sandy land…

  • Condition-Suspension

    Open Access•Timothy Choy, Jerry C Zee et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 77•References: 15

Atmospheric scenes compel anthropology into a dilution: a shift in concentration. Working through suspension as a condition through which to ask into life in the air, this Opening pauses with moments of arrest, distribution, and deposit by various airs. Such moments compel a reorientation of attention toward airy things even as they model a recomposition of anthropological inquiry by atmosphere. Exploring how sands shift and settle in a Chinese w…
