Teaching Theory Anthropologically, Close to the Ground
teaching anthropological theory is complex because there are so many potential approaches one could take. This essay explores how to teach theory to undergraduates by employing an empirical perspective. This article analyzes the different messages communicated in Malaysia by violent acts labeled amok. In the colonial period, English-language uses of the term represented the presence of an anti-modern remnant among the peninsula's Malay population, one that led to a medico-legal understanding of individualized violence. A transient site like an expressway raises questions about modern forms of power and the shifting role of the state in regulating space. Since 1994, an 850-kilometer expressway has linked peninsular Malaysia north and south.
