    Open Access•Daniel Chandler•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2022•References: 1

Saussure regarded nautical flag signalling codes as a prime example of semiological systems. They have something in common with language (e.g., the principle of arbitrariness) but also some distinctive features (for instance, visual signifiers are unlike auditory ones in being able to deploy different features at the same time, such as shape and colour). The best-known example is the International Code of Signals (ICS). The system as it was durin…

  • As Long-Winded as Possible

Daniel Chandler•ARTICLE•The Review of English Studies•2009

From around 1813 until his death three decades later, Robert Southey was working on his eccentric, unfinished masterpiece, The Doctor &c. Although five volumes were published in his lifetime, and two more posthumously, the comic story of ‘Doctor Daniel Dove of Doncaster and his horse Nobs’ on which the work is based, and which is promised from the beginning, is never told. The present essay reveals what that originating story was, and traces it b…

Daniel Chandler, Joan Meisel et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 3

A random sample of 632 female head of household welfare recipients in two California counties was interviewed three times in the period between 1999 and 2001 to assess the correlates of substance abuse. Results suggest that a need for substance abuse services is associated with going on and off welfare more than once, leaving welfare for negative reasons, failing to find employment, and a low trajectory of earned income. These findings suggest th…

  • Robert Southey and The Prelude's 'Arab Dream

Daniel Chandler•ARTICLE•The Review of English Studies•2003

Book V of The Prelude contains the famous ‘Arab dream’, attributed to ‘a Friend’ from 1804 to 1839, thereafter to the poet. Critics have read it as Wordsworth's own (whether ‘real’ dream or ‘deliberate invention’). In Robert Southey, however, Wordsworth had ‘a Friend’ who may have told him of such a dream. Southey ‘dreamt much’ about the Deluge in 1801 when his imagination was exercised by a series of texts and writing projects intimately related…
