Covid-19 vaccination implementation in six lower- and middle-income countries: Successes, challenges, and lessons for pandemic preparedness
The COVID-19 pandemic challenged health systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) to rapidly deploy vaccines, target adult populations, and integrate the COVID-19 vaccine into existing vaccination programs. This evaluation examined COVID-19 vaccination implementation and planning experiences of six LMICs. We aimed to identify common strategies and investments contributing to country-level readiness to scale up COVID-19 vaccination and ga…
Supporting children’s wellbeing through outdoor time: Opportunities to integrate consistent outdoor time into the elementary school day
Background Time in nature supports cognitive, psychological, academic, and health benefits. Outdoor time during school can provide young people with equitable access to these benefits, however, there are within-school constraints. Understanding if and how teachers can frequently and consistently incorporate outdoor time in the schoolyard into their classroom activities can inform broader implementation. Methods A mixed-methods observational study…
Exploring the impact of a maternal support grant to improve mental health and food security amongst pregnant women in South Africa during the Covid‐19 pandemic
Social protection during pregnancy may support pregnant women struggling to meet basic needs to ensure a healthy pregnancy and buffer negative impacts of multiple adversities. We assessed the effect of a bimonthly digital food voucher, delivered to pregnant women during the COVID‐19 pandemic in the Cape Town area, on their mental health, hunger, and dietary diversity. Pregnant women from antenatal clinics in specific high‐poverty areas were invit…
Beyond here, beyond now, beyond human: Reflecting on Ghostly Presences in Field Research
The research encounter can be understood as an interaction between an individuated researcher positioned inside or outside a community or culture, a more fluid researcher testing and sometimes crossing the permeable boundaries of a shifting community, or a brief, fragile entanglement of dynamic trajectories. Within this last, relational approach, previous work identifies the agency of multiple past and present human social relationships in the co…
Living with landscape fire: Landholder understandings of agency, scale and control within fiery entanglements
Around the world, debates over how to manage and adapt to bushfires (or wildfires) are increasingly prominent as more and different people, many of whom have little or no experience with landscape fire or land management, inhabit fire-prone environments. But bushfire events represent only the most visible aspect of complex entanglements which operate across huge temporal and spatial scales and over which humans have very limited control. In this …
Divergent approaches to resolving pressures on NRM and DRR programs: A case study of sustainable fire management training
Mirrors as environmental enrichment for African green monkeys
Stainless steel circular mirrors were employed in an enrichment plan for 105 singly housed male African green monkeys. We observed 25 randomly selected males to measure mirror use and to assess the mirrors' effectiveness as an enrichment item. We conducted additional mirror‐use surveys on all 105 males using fingerprint accumulation as an indicator (rated on a scale of 0 to 4). Use was defined as either being in contact with the mirror (contact u…
