This article takes a cultural approach to analysing the profound privatisation of the public in one of the many places in which it manifests: an art gallery. Critical Focus: Study of an Arts Centre is a 15-minute, two-channel film documenting the everyday life of an art gallery during the exhibition installation period. It was made as part of a sociological investigation of skilled but invisible labour in the art gallery, such as that of gallery technicians. The air sustains, connects and conditions our lives and has been of growing relevance to social scientists adopting an atmospheric approach to social life. Nonetheless, in screen studies, air’s critical uptake has so far been limited to narrative cinema, leaving it undertheorized in non-fiction filmmaking. In this reflexive commentary we provide critical reflections on the challenges of recruiting professional women football players as experienced by the researchers. This essay examines the way the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark (1920–1988) revisits and reconstructs the scene of birth in works that invoke, directly or indirectly, the figure of the egg. It compares Clark's reconstructions in relation to Jacques Lacan's account of birth, the development of the individuated subject and the normative, patriarchal social relations that subject upholds.
