  • Everyday peace as a theory to explain victims’ peacemaking actions in intimate partner violence situations

    Open Access•Lily M Kelly, Anthony Ware et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of Victimology•2022•References: 5

This paper assesses the transferability of the concept of everyday peace, developed in the conflict and peace studies literature, to practices utilised by people experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). The relevance of everyday peace to IPV is assessed by mapping typologies of the concept against behaviour that victims implement to manage and survive abusive relationships. To collect these data, experienced family violence practitioners wer…

  • Restive Peace

    William O Saas, Rachel Hall•ARTICLE•Rhetoric and Public Affairs•2016•References: 1

The U.S. news media’s heavy circulation of images of dead soldiers returning home from Vietnam in “body bags” is frequently offered as an explanation for the state of popular political disaffection with war commonly called “Vietnam Syndrome.” We argue that the rhetoric of Vietnam Syndrome misdiagnoses dissent against war as a photo-pathogenic affective disorder, a visually transmitted disease of the popular political mind. In their respective att…

  • The Transparent Traveler

Rachel Hall, Rachel Clare Hall•BOOK•Transparent Traveler•2015•Cited by: 9

At the airport we line up, remove our shoes, empty our pockets, and hold still for three seconds in the body scanner. Deemed safe, we put ourselves back together and are free to buy the beverage we were prohibited from taking through security. In The Transparent Traveler Rachel Hall explains how the familiar routines of airport security choreograph passenger behavior to create submissive and docile travelers. The cultural performance of contempor…

    Rachel Hall•ARTICLE•Women's studies quarterly•2011

Cleared for Takeoff: Air Passenger Efficiency Training in the Post-9/11 Era Rachel Hall (bio) The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and other security agencies internationally began requiring passengers to place their regulation-size liquids, gels, and aerosols in a clear plastic bag in the fall of 2006. The policy was instituted in response to a thwarted attempt to blow up a British airplane using liquid explosives. Initially, the TSA…

  • Patty and Me

    Rachel Hall•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2006•References: 1

This essay responds to Michael Bowman's call for “performed memories” that challenge the production and reproduction of knowledge. The author performs memories of her changing relationship to the Patty Hearst archive in order to resist the postmodern knowledge that nostalgia is (1) uniform and (2) the enemy of progressive political action. The author animates feminist nostalgia for Patty Hearst in order to demonstrate that encounters between view…

  • It Can Happen to You”

    Open Access•Rachel Hall, R R Hall•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2004•Cited by: 17•References: 5

This essay provides a critical analysis of rape prevention since the 1980s. I argue that we must challenge rape prevention's habitual reinforcement of the notion that fear is a woman's best line of defense. 1 suggest changes that must be made in the anti-rape movement if we are to move past fear. Ultimately, I raise the question of what, if not vague threats and scare tactics, constitutes prevention
