Between Suicide and Regret: Media Representations of Gender‐Affirming Care for Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth
Prompted by intense public debate and policy shifts, this study examines news media representations of gender‐affirming care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth in Sweden from 2019 to 2023. The analysis draws on Hall's theories of media representation and articulation, with a framework focussing on risk and temporality. Analysing media representations is crucial for understanding how societal discourses on gender dysphoria are shaped. …

Finansiell feminism: Jämställdhet & ekonomi i självhjälpsformat
Mobile applications against gender-based violence are a global and growing phenomenon, with hundreds of apps available in the international market. In this article, we analyze how apps and digital technologies are discursively construed as measures against (gender-based) intimate partner violence in marketing and media coverage of three Swedish businesses and their digital tools aiming to combat and prevent violence. Focusing on sociotechnical im…
Trygga digitala rum. Bortom debatten om triggervarningar och cancel culture
This paper explores the concept of “safe spaces” in digital learning environments, specifically in the context of gender studies education. Through a pedagogical development project called Safe Spaces Online, we collaborated with colleagues and students to address the complexities of safety in online education. Rather than reproducing the often-sensationalized portrayal of gender studies students and university settings found in mainstream media,…
In the business of gendered violence: The private shelter discourse in Sweden
For-profit companies have begun competing with women’s shelters for ‘clients’ trying to escape violence. Using discourse theory, this study examines how 20 private shelters describe their business. The analysis shows that private shelters describe themselves as: (1) having a broad expertise and target group: (2) being able to tend to the individual needs of any client; and (3) being highly available and flexible. We understand this as an expressi…
Selling feminist stories: Popular feminism, authenticity and happiness
By interviewing Swedish feminist activists who sell commodities to serve feminist purposes, this study focuses on how they articulate their engagement and make it intelligible. To untangle how articulations about feminist businesses may stabilise, reshape and challenge feminist values and engagement, we use theories of popular feminism alongside discourse theory to capture its contingencies. The analysis shows that, rather than enhancing sales by…
The patriarchy can't dance with us: Statement, separatism and safety
The music festival Statement was initiated as a response to sexual violence towards women at other festivals, and during the work of creating a safe festival, separatism became the feminist strategy. In this paper we analyse media reporting from Statement, with a focus on the desire for safety. Using psychoanalytical discourse theory, we analyse different media materials, focusing on emotive language and fantasmatic narratives. We argue that in t…
The fantasy of the new man: Norm-Critique, Vulnerability and Victimhood
In this article, the Swedish gender-equality initiative Men and Gender Equality is analyzed. The goal is to empirically examine some of the affective dimensions at play in the ways in which a ‘norm-critical’ perspective on masculinity is articulated as a solution to gender equality. Our analysis reveals ambivalences operating within the initiative’s use of norm-critical perspectives. Despite the apparent intention to offer men the hope of emancip…
The discourse of social innovation and gender equality
In Swedish government discourse, social entrepreneurship and social innovation have come to be articulated as the solutions to a wide array of societal challenges and social problems. Within this discourse of social innovation, gender equality is articulated as a key determinant in conquering all societal challenges defined in the UN's Agenda 2030. The aim of this paper is to analyse the Swedish government's discourse on social innovation, and ho…
Mindre rum, nya gränser och kollektivets underminering. Det nazistiska hotet mot HBTQ-rörelsen
Support for right-wing extremist organizations and ideologies has increased in Sweden and other European countries in recent years, expressed for instance in organized Nazi attacks against LGBTQ activists. Against this background, ten LGBTQ activists in Sweden have been interviewed about their experience of such attacks. By using feminist theories on violence and theories on social movements, our analysis shows that such actions are experienced a…
Feminism Means Business: Business Feminism, Sisterhood and Visibility
By interviewing self-proclaimed feminists with small-scale businesses who sell feminist commodities, the aim of this article is to understand why and how the market has become an arena for doing feminism and what this can tell us about contemporary feminism. Using theories of postfeminism and popular feminism in combination with Lacanian discourse theory, the analysis shows that feminism is renegotiated into ownership by reshaping the feminist di…
Det befriande ansvarets paradox. En studie av jämställdhetsinitiativet #killmiddag
Men’s responsibility is currently in focus in much of public debate on gender equality in Sweden and a number of initiatives display an ambition to include men in what has traditionally been regarded a women’s issue. One of these initiatives is called #killmiddag (#guytalk), a call out to men to get together and have intimate conversations in order to free themselves from destructive norms of masculinity. The empirical material consists of conver…
Coffee by women: The ‘duty of ethical enjoyment’
This article explores the contemporary trend of deploying feminist values in the case of ethical branding. Using the psychoanalytical concepts logics of fantasy and enjoyment, we analyse the campaign by Swedish coffee brand Zoégas, Coffee by Women, to understand how a combination of development discourse, ‘women’s empowerment’ and the opportunity to ‘do good’ is employed to sell coffee. The analysis shows that the campaign depicts the threat of a…
