The Heritagization and Institutionalization of Taekkyeon: An Intangible Cultural Heritage
Taekkyeon, a Korean traditional martial art focussing on the harmony of the individual and community has been listed as the first martial art of the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. Though taekkyeon involves competitive elements as a martial art, taekkyeon masters and practitioners have emphasized its natural and playful characteristics, with connecting the peace of the inner self and the unity o…
Interrogating the ‘Population Problem’ of the Non-Western Empire: Japanese Colonialism, the Korean Peninsula, and the Global Geopolitics of Race
This paper examines the colonial discourse of the global population problem in Korea under Japanese rule (1910–1945). I consider the recent call of Alison Bashford to draw attention to the geopolitical and spatial dimensions of the colonial population discourse in the non-Western Japanese Empire and to interrogate global population from the perspective of East Asian imperialism in the twentieth century. By opening up the colonial archives on popu…
Managing “dis-ease”: Print media, medical images, and patent medicine advertisements in colonial Korea
Over the past several decades, cultural studies scholars have shown a keen interest in the symbiosis between mass media and medicine, paying substantial attention to the capacity of media to construct meanings and images of health and disease and their material effects. In this article, I attempt to extend the insights of this scholarship into the historical context of colonial Korea under the non-western imperial power of Japan in the early 20th…
Picturing Empire and Illness: Biomedicine, Venereal Disease and the Modern Girl in Korea under Japanese Colonial Rule
Reflecting on recent debates within cultural studies on non-Western modernities and 'cultural studies in/of Asia', this essay explores a cultural history of venereal disease (VD) in Korea under Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945). The colonial representation of and discourse on VD in Western colonial settings was often built around a missionary medical account of sin and disease and a colonial dialectic of white civilization and non-white backward…
Husband Murder as the "Sickness" of Korea: Carceral Gynecology, Race, and Tradition in Colonial Korea, 1926-1932
So far, the feminist history of colonialism has been examined mainly in Western imperial settings characterized by the familiar racial duality of white and nonwhite. In this article, I draw attention to the East Asian imperial context, marked by racial proximity and ambiguity between ruler and ruled. I do so by focusing on Japanese physician Takeki Kudō's study of husband murderers in colonial Korea (1910-1945). A critical analysis of Kudō's meti…

Governing Doped Bodies: The World Anti-Doping Agency and the Global Culture of Surveillance
This essay examines the governing practices of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), an organization established in 1999 to cope with the crisis of illicit performance-enhancing drug use in international sport. The background, structure, and policies of WADA are analyzed while reflecting upon recent cultural studies debates on governmentality. In doing so, it is shown how WADA policies fundamentally work to police athletic bodies. Also demonstrate…
