  • Militarization of Japanese Local Communities during the High Economic Growth Period

    Open Access•Hiroko Matsuda•ARTICLE•Japanese Sociological Review•2021

  • Paul D. Barclay. Outcasts of Empire

    Open Access•Hiroko Matsuda•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

Indigenism is one of the keys to understanding the political, social, and cultural conditions of Taiwan following the democratization movement, which attempted to shift Taiwan’s ideological base from Sinocentrism to cultural pluralism. Questioning this strong theory seeing indigenism as a postwar development, Paul D. Barclay suggests, in Outcasts of Empire: Japan’s Rule on Taiwan’s “Savage Border,” 1874–1945, that “nationality, internationalism, …

  • Becoming Japanese in the Colony

    Hiroko Matsuda•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2012

This article examines how the dichotomy of the colonizer/colonized was elastic, but sustained by people's everyday existence in the Japanese colony by examining experiences of Okinawan migrants in colonial Taiwan. While Taiwanese struggled to become 'Japanese' by mastering Japanese language and practicing Japanese customs in their daily lives, Japanese migrants in Taiwan also tried to become 'Japanese' in distinguishing themselves from the coloni…

During the post-war occupation period in Japan (1945–1952), a number of political and legal reforms were conducted under the GHQ/SCAP's initiatives. Enhancement of women's rights was one of the major targets of GHQ/SCAP's policies, and existing studies have examined if the reforms have actually achieved the democratization of Japanese gender relations. This paper challenges some of the assumptions made in previous studies, and has revealed how im…

    Hiroko Matsuda•ARTICLE•Japanese Studies•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 6

In spite of growing interest in the formation of Okinawan identity, little attention has yet been paid to the internal divisions and diversity within the Ryūkyū Islands, or to the pre-war history of Okinawa. This article focuses on the Yaeyama archipelago of the southern end of Okinawa prefecture. It explores the way the region shaped its own Yaeyama identity in the early twentieth century by developing Yaeyama Studies separate from Okinawa Studi…

  • "Occupation" and the Movement of People within the Japanese Empire

    Open Access•Hiroko Matsuda•ARTICLE•International Journal of Japanese…•2005

Although there have been few studies on Yaeyama (the southern end of Ryukyu Archipelago) locals’ migration during the pre Asia-Pacific period, a significant number of people went from there to colonial Taiwan, in particular during the 1920s and 1930s. In this paper, I discuss why many locals of Yaeyama worked in colonial Taiwan by analysing narratives of former migrants in autobiographies and my own interview research. First, this paper demonstra…
