Leicester's Men and their Plays
For three decades, the Earl of Leicester's Men dominated the early Elizabethan stage and helped develop the main features of Shakespearean theatre. Leicester's Men and their Plays is the first book-length study of this foundational playing company, who toured more widely than any other company, performed more often for Queen Elizabeth's court than any other adult troupe, and established the first major playhouses near London. Building on decades …

The location of Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies’ ‘institutional presence’ in higher education is well documented; however, less well understood are nuances between different institutional ‘types’ and the way that Cultural Studies is variously taught and practiced in these settings. This paper will explore the authors’ experiences of teaching with Cultural Studies in Australian regional universities and the opportunities that Cultural Studies presents in these ‘peripheral’ loca…
The Politics of Racial Symbolism
This article assesses the link between racial symbolism and corporate education reform through the political discourse of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick between 2007 and 2010. Where many observers find the representation of high profile Black elected officials as an attenuation of racial domination, I argue it is the symbolism of racial progress that is utilized to advance corporate interests in public education reform. Patrick's discourse …
The possibility of saying in the early modern playhouses
For an ethical relation to exist between two interlocutors, according to Emmanuel Levinas, the potential for dialogue (an unimaginable future) must first exist. Levinas calls this Saying, opposed to the prescription of fixed meaning: the Said. Against the notion that a Shakespearean play text should be closed off by seeking to understand ‘what it means’ or that a performance can be measured by its fidelity to the text, each of which amounts to th…

Race in the Color‐blind Era
This paper reviews the emergence of Black elected officials and the deracialization concept within the literature of Blacks politics. The aim is to provide an overview of the critical issues and debates regarding Black elected officials since the Civil Rights Movement. I contend that an understanding of deracialization as an analytical construct, to assess the viability of Black elected officials and election outcomes, is clearer when examined fr…
German Romanticism Renewed
In German studies as well as in literary and culture studies more generally, a reengagement with and re-exploration of Romanticism and its aesthetic, literary, philosophical, and political heirs is under way. Essay collections including The Relevance of Romanticism: Essays on German Romantic Philosophy (ed. Dalia Nassar, 2014), Constructions of German Romanticism (ed. Mattias Pirholt, 2011), and The Cambridge Companion to German Romanticism (ed. …

The Unstated
To say that the phrase ‘X is unaustralian’ is an unethical statement would seem to be stating the obvious. Yet we must delve beyond the obvious nature of this observation by examining whether an ethical framework could indeed accommodate this phrase. With reference to the work of Emmanuel Levinas and others, this paper will argue in the first instance that the epithet ‘unaustralian’ is indeed an unethical attribution since it denies the subject o…
Future Generations and Contemporary Ethics
Future generations do not exist, and are not determinate in their make-up. The moral significance of future generations cannot be accounted for on the basis of a purely individualistic ethic. Yet future generations are morally significant. The Person-Affecting Principle, that (roughly) only acts which are likely to affect particular individuals are morally significant, must be augmented in such a way as to take into account the moral significance…
Tracing Calculation [ Calque Calcul ] Between Nicolas Abraham and Jacques Derrida
Tracing Calculation [Calque Calcul] Between Nicolas Abraham and Jacques Derrida Lawrence Johnson To calculate the loss—is this the challenge that Nicolas Abraham has given to Jacques Derrida? Between 1959 and 1975, the year of Abraham’s unexpected death, they were close friends, sharing what Elisabeth Roudinesco describes as “a marginal position in relation to the dominant philosophical discourse of the day, and an almost identical syntax” (599).…

Theories of Political Economy
'Political economy' has been the term used for the past 300 years to express the interrelationship between the political and economic affairs of the state. In Theories of Political Economy, first published in 1992, James A. Caporaso and David P. Levine explore some of the more important frameworks for understanding the relationship between politics and economics, including the classical, Marxian, Keynesian, neoclassical, state-centred, power-cent…

State Revenue Shortfalls
The budgetary alternatives available to and employed by states to deal with budgetary shortfalls in the early 1980's are examined. The study suggests it may be preferable for states to consider relaxing the self-imposed requirements of an annually balanced budget. The basic conclusion is that policy makers should formulate a rule that considers the opportunity costs of their decisions

Selecting Social Goals
The differences between the neoclassical concept of substantive rationality and the recently proposed alternative, procedural rationality, is clarified. It is demonstrated that abandoning neoclassical rationality does not, in itself, provide a rational basis for evaluating alternative institutional or policy goals. Hayek contradiction-resolution model is examined as one way to evaluate such goals. The possibility that ends must be based on explic…
