Contextualised shared leadership: A Canadian case study
This account summarises the findings from one component of a six-stage study conducted in multiple international sites. Following a series of interviews, a 10-month case study was conducted in a K-12 private school in western Canada. Initial interviews demonstrated how the school manifested shared leadership, clear pedagogical goals, student success, and strong community support. Members of the school agreed to have two university researchers con…

Hidden Depths: The Wicked Problem of Groundwater Management in a Spanish Aquifer, 1964-1990
International transfers of expertise and technology in the postwar era provided access to previously untapped aquifers around the world. Large-scale groundwater use transformed environments and economies but created new stakeholder conflicts and problems of long-term stability. In one such case, between 1964 and 1990 heavy extraction from the Almonte-Marismas aquifer system in the arid province of Huelva, Spain, created rapid economic growth that…
Medieval Christianity in Practice
Responding to Violence: Liturgy, Authority and Sacred Places, C. 900– C . 1150
The principle that church buildings constitute sacred spaces, set apart from the secular world and its laws, is one of the most enduring legacies of medieval Christianity in the present day. When and how church buildings came to be defined as sacred has consequently received a good deal of attention from modern scholars. What happened when that status was compromised, and ecclesiastical spaces were polluted by acts of violence, like the murder of…

Before the Gregorian Reform: The Latin Church at the Turn of the First Millennium, by John Howe
John Howe’s avowed aim is to ‘reinsert the history of the Church into the story of the rise of the West’ (p. 6). He presents a history of the tenth- and eleventh-century Church (in his phrase, ‘the millennial church’), starting with the decline of Carolingian rule and the destruction of churches and religious houses by pagan invaders in particular, at the end of the ninth century, and ending with the pontificate of Leo IX—although he also include…

Power, Choice and Control: How Do Personal Budgets Affect the Experiences of People with Mental Health Problems and Their Relationships with Social Workers and Other Practitioners
There has been substantial research on the implementation of personal budgets across adult social care in England, but relatively little exploration of take-up within the field of mental health—and whether personal budgets are providing an effective mechanism for service users to exercise greater power, choice and control in their lives. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with fifty-two people using mental-health-related social care services and tw…
The role of family carers in the use of personal budgets by people with mental health problems
Personal budgets aim to increase choice and independence for people with social care needs but they remain underused by people with mental health problems compared to other disability groups. The use of personal budgets may impact on families in a variety of ways, both positive and negative. This paper draws on interviews, undertaken in 2012-2013 with 18 family carers and 12 mental health service users, that explored experiences of family involve…
And the Stuff that I'm Able to Achieve Now Is Really Amazing’: The Potential of Personal Budgets as a Mechanism for Supporting Recovery in Mental Health
While there is substantial common ground between the ideas of self-directed support and recovery, there are also significant differences in how these ideas have been implemented in policy and practice. This paper develops an ‘ideal type’ model of how personal budgets may need to be set up for people with mental health difficulties if they are to be effective as a mechanism that can enable recovery. Aspects of this ‘ideal type’ model are then exam…

The fall of demonstrative them: Evidence from Appalachia
The varieties of English in the United States’ Appalachian region have undergone changes throughout the 20th century. This paper examines a change to one of the more stereotyped of vernacular dialect features, the use of them in a demonstrative determiner construction: them apples are the best . Although this dialect feature is found in English varieties around the world, this study is the first to take up a quantitative assessment of it as a soc…

The Virgin Mary in Cathar Thought
The central Middle Ages in western Europe witnessed both a significant growth in the cult of the Virgin Mary and the rise of the dualist heretical movements known as the Cathars. Whilst the Cathars' dualism meant they denied any role for the Virgin Mary in the incarnation, nevertheless they often assigned her an important place in their beliefs. This article explores the considerable affinities which existed between contemporary orthodox doctrine…
Klöster und Orden im Mittelalter
Klöster und Orden im Mittelalter, by Gudrun Gleba (Darmstadt: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, 2002; pp. 148. Pb.n.p.). As befits a work published in a series entitled Geschichte Kompakt Mittelalter, this book does what it says on the spine: in just under one hundred and fifty pages Gleba covers the whole history of medieval monasticism in Latin Europe from its origins in the fourth-century Egyptian desert to the monastic visitations of reform…

The Rituale: The Evolution of a New Liturgical Book
Odo of Sully, Bishop of Paris (1200-8), decreed in his statutes that each parish priest within his diocese should have a book called a manuale , which should contain the ordo of service for extreme unction, the catechism, baptism, and everyday things. His prescription is the earliest mention in the episcopal legislation that a parish priest should have one particular book dedicated to the liturgy for all the services associated with pastoral care…
Penance in the Age of Gregorian Reform
On 28 January 1077 at the castle of Canossa in the northern Appenines King Henry IV was absolved from his excommunication by Pope Gregory VII. Henry’s reconciliation with the Church represented the successful conclusion to what had been a hazardous mission for both him and his small entourage, one which had involved a difficult journey through the alpine passes in winter. It culminated in the king, having abandoned his royal garb for simple wooll…
Household Welfare in Four Rural Mexican Communities: The Economic and Social Dynamics of Surviving National Crises
During the past two decades, national economic and political crises have threatened livelihoods and localities in rural Mexico. However, household-level data from agrarian reform communities studied in 1984 and 1996 show substantial improvement in standards of living. Increased remittance flows provided liquidity for investment in local production as well as household consumption. Increased labor force participation by women and community activis…

Microfossil evidence for land movements associated with the AD 1964 Alaska earthquake
Microfossil diatom and pollen data from a number of cores at coastal marshes at Girdwood Flats and Kenai Flats in Cook Inlet, Alaska, suggest that there was a phase of gradual land subsidence prior to the main shock of the ad 1964 earthquake. This phase followed a long period of gradual land uplift since the last large earthquake, which occurred about 730–900 years ago. Caesium ( 137 Cs) records indicate that subsidence started approximately 15 y…

Otto III’s Penance: A Case Study of Unity and Diversity in the Eleventh-Century Church
In the spring of 999 the Emperor Otto III went on pilgrimage to the shrine of the Archangel Michael at Monte Gargano in southern Italy. His pilgrimage was not widely recorded; it was not referred to in any of the works produced in the Empire in the next half century, and only briefly mentioned in three South Italian works. But Otto’s pilgrimage was described more extensively in the eleventh-century vitae of two saints: the anonymous Greek Vita Ni…

A new model for royal penance? Helgaud of Fleury's Life of Robert the Pious
This article studies the theme of penance in writings about early medieval kingship through a case study: in his eleventh‐century vita of Robert the Pious, Helgaud of Fleury described how the king did penance for his incestuous marriage in terms taken directly from Ambrose's Apologia David . This article, therefore, examines the influence which Ambrose had both on Helgaud and on earlier writers on kingship

‘Most illustrious king of kings’. Evidence for Ottonian kingship in the Otto III prayerbook (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 30111)
The young emperor Otto III (983–1002) has a reputation for great piety, recorded in various accounts written soon after his death. Recent scholarship has shown how much these descriptions of the devout young king owe to literary convention and clerical expectation. It is argued here that the evidence of the prayerbook (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 30111) made for the young ruler suggests that attempts were made to educate him in the p…

Neoliberalism, Gender, and Property Rights in Rural Mexico
The Mexican Constitution was revised in 1992 to foster privatization of agrarian reform lands. Legal inheritance protections for spouses were removed, and individual title holders (85 percent male) obtained rights to sell land formerly considered family patrimony. State disinvestment contributed to economic crisis in the land-reform sector. This longitudinal study of four communities in northern and central Mexico explores the counterintuitive ef…

Non-Traditional Agricultural Exports in Highland Guatemala: Understandings of Risk and Perceptions of Change
Through a case study of small-scale Kaqchikel Maya farmers involved in non-traditional export agriculture (NTAX) in the Central Guatemalan highlands, this article examines the tensions between the mostly positive perceptions of farmers and the negative assessments of many who study NTAX production. In a context of severe political-economic structural inequalities and potentially high social and cultural costs, quantitative household survey result…
