  • Music Theory as an Instrument of Nationalism

    Open Access•Daniel Goldberg, Daniel S Goldberg•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2025

This article interprets the nationalistic perspective that informs Dobri Hristov's (1875Hristov's ( -1941) ) theory of meter in Bulgarian folk music.Hristov, a composer, educator, and scholar, published the first systematic study of the meters with unequal beats that Bulgarian music has come to be known for, featuring groupings of two and three fast pulses notated with time signatures such as 5/16, 7/16, and 9/16.Focusing on his treatise "The Rhy…

  • The case for a Framework for UnderStanding Ice-Ocean iNteractions (Fusion) in the Antarctic-Southern Ocean system

Open Access•Felicity S McCormack, Sue Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2024

We are in a period of rapidly accelerating change across the Antarctic continent and Southern Ocean, with land ice loss leading to sea level rise and multiple other climate impacts. The ice-ocean interactions that dominate the current ice loss signal are a key underdeveloped area of knowledge. The paucity of direct and continuous observations leads to high uncertainty in the glaciological, oceanographic and atmospheric fields required to constrai…

  • Translation of Dobri Hristov’s “Metric and Rhythmic Fundamentals of Bulgarian Folk Music”

    Open Access•Daniel Goldberg•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2024

  • Commonality and variation in mental representations of music revealed by a cross-cultural comparison of rhythm priors in 15 countries

    Open Access•Nori Jacoby, Rainer Polak et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 105

Music is present in every known society but varies from place to place. What, if anything, is universal to music cognition? We measured a signature of mental representations of rhythm in 39 participant groups in 15 countries, spanning urban societies and Indigenous populations. Listeners reproduced random ‘seed’ rhythms; their reproductions were fed back as the stimulus (as in the game of ‘telephone’), such that their biases (the prior) could be …

  • Evaluating the model of offering expanded genetic carrier screening to high school students within the Sydney Jewish community

Open Access•Kristine Barlow-Stewart, Kayley Bardsley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2021

Programs offering reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) to high school students within the Ashkenazi Jewish community in several countries including Canada and Australia have demonstrated high uptake and retention of educational messages over time. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether testing for an expanded number of conditions in a high school setting would impact the effectiveness of education. In this questionnaire-based stud…

  • Fighting for a (wide enough) seat at the table

Anthony Meadows, Sigrún Daníelsdóttir et al.•ARTICLE•Fat Studies•2020

Few jurisdictions provide legal protection against discrimination on the basis of weight despite evidence of pervasive inequalities faced by fat individuals in employment, healthcare, education, and other domains. Yet, in the last two decades, advocacy efforts in several countries aimed to remedy this situation have been largely unsuccessful. We present a cross-national conceptual analysis of three significant anti-discrimination developments reg…

  • Ice Shelf Buttressing

    Open Access•Daniel Goldberg, Daniel N Goldberg•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

Parts of the margins of the Antarctic and (to a lesser extent) Greenland ice sheets are marked by floating ice shelves which are fed by fast‐flowing ice streams from the ice sheet interior. While these ice shelves do not contribute directly to sea level, they play an important role in restraining the flow of ice from the ice sheet. This restraint is often referred to as ice shelf buttressing, and it is potentially of great importance to the stabi…

  • Timing Variations in Two Balkan Percussion Performances

    Open Access•Daniel Goldberg•ARTICLE•Empirical Musicology Review•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Many songs and dance pieces from the Balkan Peninsula employ aksak meter, in which two categorically different durations, long and short, coexist in the sequence of beats that performers emphasize and listeners move to. This paper analyzes the durations of aksak beats and measures in two recorded percussion performances that use a particular aksak beat sequence, long-short-short. The results suggest that the timing of beats varies in conjunction …

  • Querying Inter-disciplinary Approaches

    Open Access•Daniel Goldberg, Daniel S Goldberg•ARTICLE•Culture Medicine and Psychiatry•2013

  • Contributions to the Antimicrobial Spectrum of Hop Constituents

    Open Access•Vanita Srinivasan, Daniel Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Botany•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • Scientific Proceedings-Panel Reports

Open Access•Allan Compton, Daniel Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1985
