  • Becoming Worthy Ancestors

Benedict Anderson, Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert et al.•BOOK•Becoming Worthy Ancestors•2011

Why does it matter that nations should care for their archives, and that they should develop a sense of shared identity? And why should these processes take place in the public domain? How can nations possibly speak about a shared sense of identity in pluralistic societies where individuals and groups have multiple identities? And how can such conversations be given relevance in public discussions of reconciliation and development in South Africa…

Martin Bernal, David Chioni Moore•BOOK•Black Athena Writes Back•2001

Black Athena Writes Back is a direct response to another book, Black Athena Revisited (BAR).That volume, which came out in 1996, is a collection of essays written by some distinguished scholars from a number of disciplines. These writers, while conceding various merits to my work, are generally critical of it-sometimes violently so.Some of the contributors to BAR attack the general project of Black Athena for purely scholarly reasons, others from …

Martin Bernal: The project is on the origins of ancient Greece; it's both historiographic and historical. I set up two accounts for those origins, which I call the Ancient and the Aryan models. We've been schooled in the Aryan model, according to which Greek civilization is the product of conquest from the north by Indo-European speakers, or Aryans. This differs from the accounts by Classical Greeks, who say their ancestors lived in idyllic simpl…

What is classical about Classical civilization? In one of the most audacious works of scholarship ever written, Martin Bernal challenges the foundation of our thinking about this question. Classical civilization, he argues, has deep roots in Afroasiatic cultures. But these Afroasiatic influences have been systematically ignored, denied or suppressed since the eighteenth century—chiefly for racist reasons. The popular view is that Greek civilizati…

The Chung-hua min-kuo tzu-yu tang or tzu-yu tangwas named after the Japanese Jiyūtōwhich was conventionally known as the 'Liberal Party'. However, in both Japanese and Chinese the word Jiyū/tzu-yu retained strong connotations of 'liberty' which have been lost by the word 'Liberal'. It seems best therefore to leave the title untranslated

  • On the Transmission of the Alphabet to the Aegean before 1400 B. C

Martin Bernal•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•1987

This article argues that Rhys Carpenter's date of ca. 700 and Naveh's of the 11th century B. C. for the transmission of the Semitic alphabet to Greece, are both far too low. New finds of early inscriptions in North Arabic scripts, notably that at Kāmid el-Lōz, revive the hypothesis proposed by Praetorius at the beginning of the century, that the so-called "new letters" in the Greek alphabet derive from ones found in Thamudic and Safaitic, for con…
