  • Influences of the European Kingdoms of Late Antiquity on the Basque Country: An Ancient‐DNA Study

Ainhoa Alzualde, Neskuts Izagirre et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 16

The Aldaieta cemetery (6th–7th century AD, Basque Country) provides an excellent opportunity for analysing the relationships between biology and culture. Culturally it presents material features whose origins lie in the Northern Pyrenean Frankish kingdom, while genetically it reveals greater affinity to the present‐day populations of the northern Iberian Peninsula. This raises the question of the degree of influence exerted by the large European …

  • Ancient mtDNA haplogroups: A new insight into the genetic history of European populations

    Open Access•N Izaguirre, C De La Rúa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002•References: 4

In the present work, DNA was extracted from 63 skeletal samples recovered at the Neolithic site of San Juan ante Portam Latinam (SJAPL) (Araba, Basque Country). These samples have proved useful as genetic material for the performance of population studies. To achieve this it was necessary to overcome the methodological problems arising when working with damaged DNA molecules. We succeeded in performing an amplification and restriction analysis of…

  • Structuring the Genetic Heterogeneity of the Basque Population: A View from Classical Polymorphisms

    Carmen Manzano, C De La Rúa et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 3

In this study we analyze 18 classical polymorphisms (ABO, Rh, MNSs, Lewis, P, Duffy, Kell, ADA, ESD, PGM1, PGD, AK1, ACP1, GLO1, HP, GC, TF, and PI) in over 2000 autochthonous individuals from 14 natural districts in three provinces of the Basque Country (Alava, Guipuzcoa, and Biscay). Heterogeneity analysis via the chi2 test and a calculation of F(ST) indicate that there is significant genetic heterogeneity between the Basque districts. The R ma…

  • The "Basqueness" of the Basques of Alava: A reappraisal from a multidisciplinary perspective

    Open Access•Carmen Manzano, J M Orue et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1996•References: 12

The genetic and linguistic peculiarity of the Basque population is well known. Analysis of the studies published to date on the Basque population reveals that these studies refer basically to the provinces of Vizcaya and Labourd, both in the Northern part of the Basque Country. Multidisciplinary information indicates that the landscape differences of the Basque Country could have conditioned differential population biodynamics in the Atlantic and…

  • Neolithic case of metastasizing carcinoma: Multiple approaches to differential diagnosis

Open Access•C De La Rúa, José Pablo Baraybar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 12

The remains of the fragmented skeleton of a mature male individual from a Neolithic mass burial (ca. 5000 years BP) are presented. The lesions consist of osteoblastic proliferation and replacement of previously normal haematopoietic tissue. The most affected area seems to have been the iliac blade. So-called 'seeding' of tumour tissue has been found in different loci in the femoral neck, sacrum, L4 and scapula. Differential diagnosis points to me…
