Knowledge politics and labor precariousness in Spanish universities: Implications for Social Anthropology
Neoliberal reforms arising from Spain's entrance into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) have had major consequences for academic practice and unleashed heated debate in the university community and society. This article explores the main transformations and basis of the political-economic model of public universities in Spain. It focuses on two dimensions of the institutional framework that have had a significant impact on teaching and re…
Health as an emerging value in the construction of quality of berries in Huelva (Spain)
This article examines how health is constructed as an emerging value of quality standards in intensive agriculture in the province of Huelva (Spain) with a specific focus on the health and welfare of female seasonal migrant workers. Some Things Never Change, We're Always Second in Line: Gendered Experiences of Progress and the Agricultural Crisis in Almeria, Spain
This article addresses sex-gender relations within the context of changing class relations shaped by the historical formation of an intensive system of agricultural production in Almeria (Spain). The analysis of work, both on the farm and within the domestic unit, guides the research, which relates socio-historical conditions and the subjective experiences and identities of men and women farmers. We begin from the theoretical premise that the cha…
The devaluation of female labour in fruit and vegetable packaging plants in Spanish Mediterranean agriculture
Based on the evidence found in two case studies of intensive agriculture in Southern Spain, this article analyses the impact of business strategies aimed at devaluing packaging plant work in the competitive integration processes currently taking place in the global agri-food value chain. The article explores three business strategies: the feminisation, segmentation and deskilling of labour, along with ethnic substitution and labour recruitment ou…
Intensive agriculture under plastic in Andalusia (Spain): A production model in question
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Andalusian agriculture is at the centre of a confrontation between those who continue to define it, sheltered behind discourses on modernity, and those who argue its condition as an enclave economy. Our analysis shows, however, how the new scenario of a global agri-food system, bisected by discourses and practices related to ‘quality’, ‘safety’ and ‘sustainability’, has also impacted on the experience…
