  • Metaphor in spoken discourse

    Lynne Cameron•CHAPTER•The Routledge handbook of…•2015

This chapter considers the nature of metaphor in spontaneous spoken discourse drawing on the author's empirical studies in a range of contexts, including focus group discussions about responses to terrorism. It discusses key issues brought to light by discoure analytic studies, including the relation between conceptual metaphor and metaphor used in talk. It describes the author's discourse dynamic theoretical framework, the use of metaphor as a r…

  • Embracing connectedness and change

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2015

Complex dynamic systems (CDS) theory offers a powerful metaphorical model of applied linguistic processes, allowing holistic descriptions of situated phenomena, and addressing the connectedness and change that often characterise issues in our field. A recent study of Kenyan conflict transformation illustrates application of a CDS perspective. Key CDS concepts and tools for thinking are described. I argue that the CDS perspective can, and should, …

  • Urban violence in Brazil and the role of the media

Ana Cristina Pelosi, Heloísa Pedroso De Moraes Feltes et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2014

This paper reports on analyses of data gathered from discourse interactions of two focus groups of Brazilian university students (n = 11) as they talk about urban violence in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. The analytical procedure follows Cameron et al.’s (2009) metaphor-led discourse analysis which focuses on the role metaphor vehicles play in the emergence of systematic metaphors in discourse. The findings highlight the trivialization of violence in…

  • Open Hearts or Smoke and Mirrors

    L David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2014

The concept of framing has been widely used to help understand how aspects of messages can shape people’s expectations and consequently influence the outcomes of communicative interactions. In this study we examine transcripts of a contentious and ultimately unsuccessful public meeting between police officials and members of the African American community following the fatal shooting of a young African American woman by police officers. We show h…

  • Metaphorizing Violence in the UK and Brazil

Lynne Cameron, Ana Cristina Pelosi et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2014

A cross-linguistic/cultural study of verbal metaphor compares responses to terrorism in the UK (N = 96) and to urban violence in Brazil (N = 11). Focus groups discussed how violence changes perceptions of risk, decisions of daily life, and attitudes to others. Metaphor vehicles were identified in transcribed data, then grouped together semantically; 15 vehicle groupings were used with similar frequencies, 16 groupings more in UK data, 14 more in …

  • Empathic mutual positioning in conflict transformation and reconciliation

Irene Bruna Seu, Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•Peace and Conflict Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 6

We employ Positioning Theory in a reanalysis of data from postconflict reconciliation conversations between Jo Berry, whose father was killed in an IRA bombing, and Patrick Magee, who planted the bomb. The analysis shows how discourse activity simultaneously positions not just the Self and the Other as individuals, but also in dialogic relation to each other, whereby multilayered identities are revealed, negotiated, and shifted. This article has …

  • The dialogic construction of self and other in response to terrorism

Lynne Cameron, Robert Maslen et al.•ARTICLE•Peace and Conflict Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 12

An applied linguistic study of talk in twelve focus groups (N=96) – six in London, where bombs exploded in July 2005, and six in Leeds, home to three of the bombers – investigates the effects of terrorism on people’s personal and social landscapes. Emotional responses of fear, of both violence and retaliation, and suspicion contribute to multiple disruptions in the construction of Self and Other. Muslim participants, who before lived with a multi…

  • Metaphor and Reconciliation

    Lynne Cameron, Lynne J Cameron•BOOK•Metaphor and Reconciliation•2012

Sixteen years after her father was killed by an IRA bomb, Jo Berry had her first conversation with the man responsible. She had made a long journey, ‘walking the footsteps of the bombers’ as she put it, determined not to give in to anger and revenge but to try to understand his motivations and perspective. Her preparedness to meet Pat Magee opened up a path to empathy that developed through their conversations over the following years. This book …

  • Landscapes of empathy

Lynne Cameron, Irene Bruna Seu•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2012

This study re-analyzes focus group data on responses to human rights abuses, to investigate how participants' experiences in their local social and physical worlds influence empathy with distant suffering others. Metaphors, metonymies, narratives, and typifying scenarios were identified in the discourse dynamics. Scenarios, metaphors, and metonymies of space and place emerge as particularly significant in the dialogic co-construction of moral rea…

  • Responding to the risk of terrorism

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This discourse-based study investigated semantic and affective aspects of metaphors used by people talking about background risk of terrorism. 96 members of the UK public participated in 12 focus group discussions, organized by gender, religion (Muslim / non-Muslim), and socio-economic status. 12,362 metaphors were identified in transcribed talk, coded for vehicle domain and discourse topic, and subjected to qualitative and some quantitative anal…

  • The Discourse Dynamics Approach to Metaphor and Metaphor-Led Discourse Analysis

Lynne Cameron, Robert Maslen et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2009

The use of metaphor as a tool to uncover people's ideas, attitudes, and values through analysis of discourse is demonstrated and illustrated with data collected in a social science research project. A “discourse dynamics” approach to metaphor situated within a complexity/dynamic systems perspective is developed. This approach is turned into a method of “metaphor-led discourse analysis” which is described in detail, using a focus group discussion …

  • Research Methodology on Language Development from a Complex Systems Perspective

    Open Access•Diane Larsen Freeman, Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•Modern Language Journal•2008•Cited by: 39•References: 9

Changes to research methodology motivated by the adoption of a complexity theory perspective on language development are considered. The dynamic, nonlinear, and open nature of complex systems, together with their tendency toward self-organization and interaction across levels and timescales, requires changes in traditional views of the functions and roles of theory, hypothesis, data, and analysis. Traditional views of causality are shifted to foc…

  • Intonation units in spoken interaction

Juup Stelma, Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2007

This paper describes the transcription process and the development of transcription skills in a research project using recorded spoken interaction as its main data. The spoken data was transcribed using intonation units, and the paper traces the development of the first author's skills in identifying such intonation units. Intertranscriber checks of transcription, involving three researchers, were used to highlight ways in which the identificatio…

  • Patterns of metaphor use in reconciliation talk

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron, Lynne J Cameron•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2007•Cited by: 37•References: 7

In a violent world, reconciliation between perpetrators and victims offers an alternative to revenge or retaliation. In such discourse, participants must make extended efforts to explain themselves to, and to understand, the Other. This article investigates emergent patterns of metaphor in reconciliation talk between an IRA bomber and victim, recorded over two and a half years. The analysis starts from identification of linguistic metaphors and w…

  • Complex Systems and Applied Linguistics

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron, Diane Larsen‐freeman et al.•BOOK•Complex systems and applied…•2007•Cited by: 30•References: 6

This book introduces and develops the potential of complex systems as a metaphor or supra-theory for systems in applied linguistics. Change and heterogeneity are central to complex systems theory and to the resonances that we find between complex systems and applied linguistics systems. The book explores these resonances and what happens when complex systems theory is used to make sense of central areas of applied linguistic concerns: language, l…

  • The Emergence of Metaphor in Discourse

    Lynne Cameron, Alice Deignan•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2006

We show how emergence offers new explanations for the behaviour of metaphorically-used expressions. Analysis of metaphors in two types of natural language data are combined: detailed analysis of continuous discourse, which offers wealth of context and the possibility of monitoring emergent forms as the discourse unfolds, and computer-assisted corpus analysis, which enables the examination of large numbers of examples of specific words and phrases…

  • Combining Large and Small Corpora to Investigate Tuning Devices Around Metaphor in Spoken Discourse

Lynne Cameron, Alice Deignan•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2003

We studied metaphorical language in spoken discourse from a number of settings to explore the words and expressions that regularly appear in the cotext of both conventional and innovative metaphors. We found that expressions that we call "tuning devices" are frequent in all the data consulted. Tuning devices have a number of different functions, clustered around the central notion of suggesting to the hearer how to interpret a metaphor. Our data …

  • Metaphors in the Learning of Science

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Children's interpretations of metaphors used in a science text and their teacher's use of explanatory metaphor are analysed and compared to identify key processes in metaphor understanding and to suggest factors that contribute to successful use of metaphor in learning science. The research adopts a Vygotskian socio‐cognitive approach to metaphor in discourse. Participants are children in Years 5 and 6, aged around 10 years, and their teacher, in…

  • Teaching Languages to Young Learners

    Open Access•Lynne Cameron•BOOK•Teaching Languages to Young…•2001

Recent years have seen rapid growth in the numbers of children being taught foreign languages at younger ages. While course books aimed at young learners are appearing on the market, there is scant theoretical reference in the teacher education literature. Teaching Languages to Young Learners is one of the few to develop readers' understanding of what happens in classrooms where children are being taught a foreign language. It will offer teachers…

  • Researching and Applying Metaphor

Open Access•Lynne Cameron, Graham Low•BOOK•Researching and Applying Metaphor•1999

Research into metaphor has become one of the fastest-growing and important areas of language research over the past twenty years, and metaphor is now recognized as central to language and language use. The implications of these findings are only just beginning to be felt in applied linguistics and this is designed to convey the excitement of metaphor study to a wider applied linguistic audience of researchers, trainers, programme developers and p…

  • Discourse Context and the Development of Metaphor in Children

Lynne Cameron•ARTICLE•Current Issues In Language and…•1996

Children encounter metaphor in all aspects of their daily lives, including the spoken and written discourse of school, and metaphor can be one of the routes through which socio-cultural norms are appropriated. The use of metaphor seems to be a basic human skill, which develops in interaction with developing world knowledge and linguistic skills. Both use of metaphor and the development of metaphor capacity take place in situations in which langua…
