  • Combating Beijing’s Sharp Power

    Open Access•Martin Hála•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2022•Cited by: 4

After a long period of engagement, the CCP's sharp power has been increasingly challenged throughout the world, in part as a response to Secretary General Xi Jinping's more aggressive approach. The openness of democratic societies that had often been a weakness exploited by the CCP has in this process proven a strength, providing resilience when fully utilized for research and outreach. As a result, the CCP's sharp power seems to be generally on …

  • Forging a New “Eastern Bloc

    Open Access•Martin Hála•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2018•Cited by: 3

The China-led “16+1” initiative in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is crafting a soft version of the old East European bloc, this time under Chinese rather than Russian tutelage. A collection of sixteen bilateral, uneven relationships with China rather than a true regional organization, 16+1 undermines existing Euro-Atlantic alliances. It also reinforces tendencies toward crony capitalism in the participating CEE states, reversing the progress t…

  • Unemployment and Age-based Labor Market Segmentation

    Open Access•Vladislav Flek, Martin Hála et al.•ARTICLE•Politická ekonomie•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 19

We analyze age-specific labor market dynamics in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia over the period 2009-2012. We document a marginalized status of young workers aged 16-24, whose risk of job loss followed by unemployment is two to three times higher than that of prime-age workers (35-49). Further more, unemployed workers aged 50-61 face relatively the lowest probability of finding a job, at rates 30-50% lower than prime-age unemployed worke…

  • Duration dependence and exits from youth unemployment in Spain and the Czech Republic

Open Access•Vladislav Flek, Martin Hála et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Research-Ekonomska…•2015

We estimate the impact of unemployment duration on exits from unemployment, along with a set of individual and other explanatory variables. The analysis is based on EU-SILC longitudinal data for the period 2007-2010 and involves Spain and the Czech Republic as examples of the two EU countries with remarkably different labour market performance but similar in their totalitarian past, post-transition economies and recent EU entry. Survival function…

  • Labour market response to economic crisis in Central Europe

    Open Access•Vladislav Flek, Martin Hála et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Sociology•2015•Cited by: 1

Our analysis confirms a lower degree of fluidity on Polish/Czech labour markets compared to Austria. In particular, we find evidence on higher employment rigidity and on lower employability of unemployed in Poland and Czech Republic. The major employment policy challenge faced by Poland and the Czech Republic is actually embodied in much lower job finding prospects of both prime-age and young unemployed in comparison with Austria. In addition, Au…
