  • The Numbers Are Eye Popping”: Statistical Consciousness as a Discursive Tool to Monitor Same-Sex Demography

    Open Access•Carol S Walther, Stephanie D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2021•References: 14

In this article, we examine newspaper accounts of same-sex demography to examine how journalists use U.S. Census Bureau statistics to discuss changes in lesbian and gay households from 1990 to 2015. We utilized Foucault’s discussion of discourse and discussed what we call statistical consciousness, the use of statistics in everyday life. We support these findings with qualitative examples of each same-sex household increase to show how journalist…

• Age-Dependent Branching Processes for Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases with Incubation Period

    Open Access•Maroussia Slavtchova-Bojkova, Maroussia N Slavtchova-Bojkova et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2010

The purpose of this paper is to review the recent results of the authors in the area of infectious disease modeling by means of branching stochastic processes. This is a new approach involving age-dependent branching models, which turned out to be more appropriate and flexible for describing the spread of an infection in a given population, than discrete time ones. Concretely, Bellman-Harris and Sevast'yanov's branching processes are investigated…

  • El primer documento conocido escrito en México por los colonizadores españoles

    Open Access•Rodrigo Martínez, N T Davies•ARTICLE•Historias (México, D.F.)•2005

    1. A technique is described for the measurement of the extent of 65Zn absorption by different regions of the intestine in the intact rat. Using this technique it was shown that the duodenum contributed 60%, the ileum 30% and the jejunum 10% to the over-all absorption of 65Zn. Negligible absorption of 65Zn occurred from the caecum and colon. 2. Using ligated loops of rat duodenum in situ, 65Zn absorption was shown to be rapid, with 1% of a 5 micro…

  • Coeficient of relationship (RI) within and between four black venezuelan populations

    Open Access•J Pinto-Cisternas, H Arvelo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997

The coefficient of relationship by isonymy Ri was obteined using paternal and maternal surnames of individuals in four black Venezuelan populations. The analysis of eight Ri values obtained from different combinations of surnames within each population and between population in two periods of time (1900–1920 and 1944–1967) show that: 1) Higher values of Ri are those that include combinations of maternal surnames, 2) Ri values of the second period…
