  • Once a Carib, Always a Carib: Historical Movements from Terra Firma to the Lesser Antilles

    Open Access•Martijn M Van Den Bel•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2026•References: 13

The so-called Island Carib Problem remains topical, and discoveries in the last decade have sparked further discussion. This article addresses this issue from the Guianas, where recent excavations have demonstrated the presence of a material counterpart of the Lesser Antilles from the seventeenth century. When compared to the insular Cayo complex, the continental complex of Malmanoury in what is today French Guiana suggests a historical movement …

  • Pre-contact water access: First discovery of pot-lined wells on Martinique

    Jean‐georges Ferrié, Jean-Georges Ferrié et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2026•References: 3

In the pre-contact Caribbean, several strategies were used to obtain and manage access to freshwater, especially in locations with a dry climate or with no permanent source. One strategy for accessing coastal aquifers was to dig a hole in the sand and stack large bottomless ceramic vessels, which acted as a well casing. In this paper we report on the first discovery of pot-stack wells in Martinique which were found during an archaeological survey…

Martijn Van Den Bel, Martijn M Van Den Bel et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In the mid-seventeenth century, the European powers sought to quench their imperial thirst in the Americas by occupying the last "uninhabited" regions. In the Guianas this meant establishing permanent colonial settlements, increasing encroachment on Indigenous land, and imposing new terms on existing commercial ties with the Amerindians, which led to violent clashes. What the Dutch colony of Suriname and the French colony of Cayenne experienced a…

  • French Governors and Dutch Merchants: Comparing the First Sugar Plantations in the French West Indies and Barbados, 1638–1664

Martijn M Van Den Bel•ARTICLE•Journal of Early American History•2022

Where most scholarship on the origins of the sugar revolution has focused on the English islands, this article draws on detailed research in Dutch and French archives to show how Dutch merchants were crucial actors in promoting the sugar revolution in the Lesser Antilles. Despite the fact that both English and French islands experienced similar developments, the relationship between these islands is barely known in English literature largely due …

This hypothesis is supported by detailed information on the career of Jan van der Goes derived from the general meetings of the Zeeland Chamber of the WIC and by appearances of the aforementioned Vandergoes in va…

The Dutch loss of Brazil in 1654 favoured the resettlement of Dutch merchants along the Wild Coast and in the Lesser Antilles and the establishment of new colonies. Cayenne Island was one of them. One WIC patent was handed to Jan Claes Langedijck, who settled at the former French fort of Cépérou, and another patent was given to David Nassy, who settled in the Anse de Rémire, situated at the opposite part of the former island. Both colonies were t…

During the 16th century, the Amerindian population of the Guianas was already aware and in contact with the Spanish settlement at Margarita. The Aruacas, the privileged allies of the Spanish, relied on their large socio-political (trade) network to obtain victuals and commercial goods from the Guianas but also raided Caribe villages to assure red slaves for the Spanish plantations and mines in the Antilles.

Celle…

During the 16th century, the Amerindian population of the Guianas was already aware and in contact with the Spanish settlement at Margarita. The Aruacas, the privileged allies of the Spanish, relied on their large socio-political (trade) network to obtain victuals and commercial goods from the Guianas but also raided Caribe villages to assure red slaves for the Spanish plantations and mines in the Antilles. The first encounters between the Amerin…
