  • Global (Best) Together With (Or Against) Local Networks and Practices? Liquid Engineering and the Uses Programme

Open Access•Peter Robbins, David Wield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2020

There is potentially tension between world class research and global standards on the one hand and local contexts of engineering and development practice on the other. One aims at scientific status and entirely new knowledge, suggesting just one standard of quality. The other at building products and processes that might bring socio‐economic development, often prizing pragmatism and bricolage. The UK‐funded programme ‘Understanding Sustainable En…

  • Exploring the Global and the Local in Engineering and International Development

Open Access•Peter Robbins, David Wield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2020

This special issue on the global and the local in engineering and development builds on an earlier JID Policy Arena on reflexive engineering. It extends our thinking by elaborating the notion of ‘liquid engineering’, which sees engineering and development as messy and improvisational, a borderland hybrid space, composed of objects and practices, and as reflexive and evolutionary. A set of research articles explore this in different ways using a s…

  • Engineering for Development as Borderland Activity

Peter Robbins, David Wield et al.•ARTICLE•Engineering Studies•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

The paper aims to build understanding of the recent growth of interest in engineering for international development as an emerging focus of new knowledge, practice, and community development. In the paper, we create a borderlands approach to studying the activities referred to as engineering for development and development engineering. These activities take place in ‘borderland’ spaces where new approaches are being tried out through creative eng…

  • Dimensions of professional competences for interventions towards sustainability

    Open Access•F Pérez Salgado, Dina Abbott et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2017•Citada por: 6•Referências: 10

This paper investigates sustainability competences through the eyes of professional practitioners in the field of sustainability and presents empirical data that have been created using an action research approach. The design of the study consists of two workshops, in which professional practitioners in interaction with each other and the facilitators are invited to explore and reflect on the specific knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours n…

  • Development engineering meets development studies

Peter Robbins, Andrew Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2017•Referências: 23

The importance of science in development has been increasingly recognised in development discourses and policy since 2000. Engineering is less visible though engineering and engineers are important for the building and maintenance of transport, water, energy, industrial, informatics, urban and health systems. This article aims to investigate why engineering has not received more emphasis, including why development engineering has not been institu…

  • Knowledge, innovation and re-inventing technical assistance for development

    Open Access•Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 18

This paper traces the evolution of Technical Assistance to Technical Co-operation alongside more recent concepts of Knowledge Management and Innovation Systems. Originally conceived as transfer from a knowledge-rich North to a knowledge-poor South, the later terminology represents a more co-operative and dialogic conception. The evolution has been driven by persistent issues concerning capacity and knowledge-in-context and by changing approaches …

  • Knowledge, learning and practice in North–South practitioner-to-practitioner municipal partnerships

    Gordon Wilson, Hazel Johnson•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 11

North–South municipal partnerships, conceptualised as practitioner-to-practitioner, potentially enhance knowledge, learning and practice because of the basis for trust within officer relationships that facilitates joint exploration of ideas. A study of two Uganda–UK municipal partnerships reveals, however, several challenges, including the extent to which practitioner differences enable critical reflection and the capability to turn learning into…

  • Beyond the Dichotomies in Technology for Development

    Open Access•Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2007•Citada por: 1•Referências: 25

That technology is essential for development has been written many times. However, a few years ago, technology was increasingly seen as part of a problem that contributed to the depoliticisation of development and reinforced existing societal structures. In response, this century has seen a reconceptualisation of technology's role, alongside that of science. Thus, it is now seen as part of a system of plural knowledges in contrast to its previous…

  • Beyond the Technocrat? The Professional Expert in Development Practice

    Open Access•Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2006•Citada por: 35•Referências: 26

This article traces the use of the term 'technocratic' to describe development practice, and the concomitant use of 'technocrat' to describe professional experts who engage in development work. It locates the use of these terms as pejorative labels within understandings of professional experts as part of an apparatus of governmentality that depoliticizes development intervention. It argues, however, that such understandings miss the crucial point…

  • The antagonistic relevance of development studies

    Open Access•Giles Mohan, Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2005•Citada por: 12•Referências: 26

This paper discusses relevance in development studies. We argue that current debates around relevance assume a hegemonic view of development, which is bolstered by the high levels of research funding from key policy-making institutions. We feel relevance can be pluralized and radicalized, but that this requires us to be ideologically transparent and to examine other ways of undertaking and validating knowledge production. This involves first, ack…

  • Institutional sustainability as learning

    Hazel Johnson, Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•1999•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

How organisations and associations can work together over time to develop new norms and practices which enhance the sustainability of development initiatives is an on-going problem. This article looks at how processes of negotiating shared agendas over the meanings of sustainability, exploring assumptions behind proposed actions, establishing means of accountability, and setting up mechanisms for investigating cause and effect in the processes an…

  • Arm in arm after the cold war? The uneasy Nato‐un relationship

    Gordon Wilson, Gordon M Wilson•ARTICLE•International Peacekeeping•1995•Citada por: 1

The two organizations, NATO and the UN, which independently did much to shape the Cold War world have suddenly been thrown together by the circumstances of the first ever UN military operation on mainland European soil, where NATO support, out‐of‐area, has been made available to the UN. However, the experience has proved a chastening one. There are major problems in co‐ordinating and accommodating the differing requirements and attitudes of the t…

  • Technological capability, NGOs, and small-scale development projects

    Gordon Wilson•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•1995

Technological capability underpins economic development, but analysis of interviews with workers in international, UK-based NGOs suggests that it is rarely addressed explicitly when considering support for development work. Instead, the core values of these NGOs tend to determine their attitudes towards technology, with the result that their impact on the development of technological capability can be contradictory. This is borne out by analysis …
