  • Renminbi appreciation and Global Value Chains in China: Exploring the linkages

Paul Bowles, Fiona Macphail et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2018•References: 30

China has experienced a rapid integration into Global Value Chains and a decade long appreciation of its exchange rate. However, these trends have been analysed largely in isolation from each other. In this paper, we explore the linkages between the two based on interviews with a sample of firms in Jiangsu Province. We show (1) how the distribution of the costs and benefits of exchange rate appreciation depends on the power hierarchies between fi…

  • Does U.S. Pressure Lead to Changes in China’s Exchange Rate

    Paul Bowles, Baotai Wang•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The role of external political pressure in the appreciation of the Chinese renminbi against the U.S. dollar since 2005 has been the subject of debate. While Chinese authorities maintain that only domestic considerations have played a role, whether the appreciation has also been the result of the exercise of international monetary power by the United States has been examined using three different approaches. The results have been contradictory wit…

  • Renminbi Internationalization: A Journey to Where

    Open Access•Paul Bowles, Baotai Wang•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 11

The renminbi is currently undergoing a process of internationalization which has raised fundamental questions about the evolution of the international monetary system and the dominance of the US dollar. In this article, we assess how far the renminbi has travelled down the internationalization road and analyse the possibilities for it challenging the role of the US dollar in the future. We utilize Cohen's () taxonomy to document the current dimen…

  • The rocky road ahead: China, the US and the future of the dollar

Paul Bowles, Baotai Wang•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2008•Cited by: 10•References: 1

The future of the dollar depends partly on China and the US being able to effectively manage the tensions arising from the large bilateral trade imbalance and the build-up of foreign exchange reserves by China. We argue that these tensions are unlikely to change over the medium term. While tensions can be managed, the possibilities for miscalculations and policy errors are significant given the complex, and sometimes inconsistent, interests of bo…

  • Flowers and criticism’: The political economy of the renminbi debate

Paul Bowles, Baotai Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2006•Cited by: 6

Since 2003 China has faced increasing pressure, especially from the US and Japan, to revalue the renminbi. In July 2005 China responded by announcing a small revaluation and a switch from a dollar peg to a tightly managed float against a currency basket. The mainstream economic debate, which we briefly review, has focused on whether, and to what extent, the renminbi is undervalued. From a political economy perspective, however, the more interesti…
